Job summary

ETH Zurich's Chair of the History and Theory of Urban Design (gta) invites three PhD candidates to join the ERC project “Co-opolis: Another Architectural History of the European City (1890-1990). The positions start March 2027 and are fully funded for four years.

Candidates will examine how third-sector actors and welfare regimes shaped housing and civic infrastructure in France, Sweden, and Switzerland. English is the working language; proficiency in the local language of the case-study country

Qualifications

• MSc degree in Architecture, History of Art, Social History, or closely related humanities field.
• Experience in publishing and archival/historical research is welcome.
• Working language is English.
• Proficiency in the language relevant to the selected case-study country: French (France), German and/or Italian (Switzerland), or Swedish (Sweden).

Responsibilities

• Investigate emergence, spatial characteristics and endurance of architectural/urban projects in France, Sweden, and Switzerland under welfare regimes and third-sector actors.
• Complete the PhD dissertation within March 2027–March 2031.
• Contribute to ERC project activities: workshops, seminars, articles, conferences, and project website.
• Engage with gta PhD programme courses and participate in research discussions and teaching activities as needed.
