Zusammenfassung

ETH Swiss GeoLab seeks a Forestry Mission Lead to drive the forest health, resilience and ecosystem services agenda within GeoLab. You will translate forestry practice and policy needs into research, data products and validated solutions, coordinating a multi‑disciplinary team and external partners.

You will report to the GeoLab leadership and guide mission outcomes, roadmaps and budget. The role combines research, program delivery and real‑world impact in Switzerland.

Qualifikationen

• Master’s or PhD degree in forestry or related fields.
• Several years of experience in applied research, program delivery or operational implementation in forest management or related areas.
• Strong understanding of forest management, ecosystems and the information needs of practitioners and public authorities.
• Knowledge of Earth observation, geospatial data and data-driven methods for forestry.
• Proven ability to identify operational problems and translate into actionable initiatives.
• Experience collaborating in diverse teams and applying research for practical benefit.
• Experience in mission-, program- or applied R&D portfolio design.
• Strong project, portfolio and budget management with transparent reporting.
• Excellent stakeholder management across practitioners, authorities, academia, industry and experts.
• Ability to work across disciplines and lead through influence.
• Strong judgement under uncertainty and willingness to challenge established approaches.
• Excellent written and spoken English and German; French is an asset.

Aufgaben

• Define an ambitious Forestry Mission addressing opportunities in forest health, resilience and ecosystem services.
• Identify operational gaps to create distinctive value for Swiss forestry and policy.
• Engage with forest owners, managers, advisory bodies, cantonal and federal authorities, researchers and industry partners.
• Translate challenges into clear research, data, product and technical requirements.
• Assess value, viability, scalability and adoption potential.
• Establish measurable mission outcomes, roadmaps and success criteria.
• Manage the delegated mission budget, milestones and reporting to leadership.
• Collaborate with GeoLab’s Geo‑Intelligence team and external partners to drive pilots and field validation.
• Assess evidence and performance and recommend continuation or termination of activities.
• Identify and mobilise ETH groups and external partners.
• Represent ETH Swiss GeoLab across forestry, scientific and innovation communities.
• Communicate goals and progress at events and conferences.
• Guide and train students, researchers and contributors and support knowledge transfer.
