Job purpose: The purpose of this internship is to provide support to the ARMU digitization project and digital preservation efforts within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The intern will gain practical experience in various stages of the digitization process, from preparing physical records to managing digital files and ensuring quality control. This role contributes to the organization’s commitment to modernizing its archival systems and making vital human rights documentation more accessible. The intern will also assist in administrative tasks, participate in meetings, and potentially contribute innovative ideas to ongoing projects, thereby supporting the broader mandate of OHCHR.
Responsibilities: The intern will support the implementation of the ARMU digitization project and digital preservation initiatives. Key duties include preparing physical records for digitization through sorting, arrangement, labelling, inventorying, and condition assessment. The role involves assisting with scanning, performing image quality reviews, and conducting completeness checks. Responsibilities also extend to OCR processing, text verification, and organizing digital files according to established conventions. The intern will help identify and rectify errors such as duplicates, missing documents, and metadata inconsistencies. Additionally, the intern will assist in preparing background documentation, drafting correspondence, reports, and presentations, and taking notes during meetings.
Education: Candidates must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be in the final academic year of/or completed a first university degree program or equivalent. A degree in Information Management, Digital Humanities, Information Technology, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field is required. Fluency in English is essential, and knowledge of another official UN language is advantageous.
Work experience: Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed a relevant university degree. A field of study closely related to the internship’s focus on digitization and information management is necessary. The ability to learn and utilize digital records management systems is also important.
