Vice President, People & Culture

Location: Remote (Preference for BC; open to AB/ON)
Travel: Occasional travel across Western Canada and the Yukon

Role Purpose

The Vice President, People & Culture will lead the organization's workforce strategy, talent development, culture, and enterprise risk management functions. As a key member of the Executive Team, this role ensures people-focused systems and culture enable operational excellence and long-term growth.

The VP will direct a People & Culture team of ~20, including senior leaders, and serve as a strategic advisor to the Executive Team and Board on workforce strategy, organizational health, risk, and DEIB priorities.

This role is ideal for a senior HR executive with strong private-sector and unionized work environment experience who is ready to transition into a high-impact non-profit leadership role.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Culture
  • Lead and execute a multi-year People & Culture strategy aligned with mission and organizational growth
  • Strengthen inclusive, values-driven culture across all regions
  • Provide strategic counsel to the Executive Team and Board on workforce trends, risk, DEIB, and organizational well-being
  • Guide succession planning, senior leadership development, and organizational capability building
  • Oversee P&C services for a unionized and non-union workforce in multiple regions
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and sector standards
People & Talent Management
  • Lead and empower a high-performing P&C team; build future HR leaders
  • Champion trauma-informed, equity-centered leadership development across all levels
  • Strengthen internal communication, employee experience, and talent engagement programs
  • Advance organizational learning, professional development, and performance management
Enterprise Risk & Governance
  • Lead enterprise risk strategy and risk management team
  • Integrate risk frameworks into planning, people strategy, and decision-making
  • Monitor emerging risks including labour relations, workforce well-being, compliance, and operational continuity
  • Engage Board committees on workforce risk, compliance, and strategic priorities
Operational Excellence & Results
  • Oversee HR budget, workforce planning, compensation strategy, and benefits programs
  • Ensure HRIS, analytics, and reporting support performance and operational clarity
  • Partner with Executive and regional leaders to anticipate workforce needs in periods of growth and expansion
  • Support resilience planning, emergency preparedness, and business continuity initiatives
Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • CPHR or equivalent designation preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive HR leadership, with 3+ years at an executive or senior level
  • Strong experience in private-sector and complex unionized environments
  • Demonstrated leadership in culture transformation, DEIB, and organizational development
  • Background in risk management and enterprise-wide planning
  • Exceptional communication, influence, and strategic planning skills
  • Experience in mission-driven or service-focused environments an asset
