Job summary

YMCA BC is seeking a dedicated Youth Support Worker to provide community supports and life skill development for vulnerable youth through workshops, counseling, and mentorship coordination.

The role involves outreach, plan development, data collection, and collaboration with schools, YMCA facilities, and community partners to support educational attainment and positive outcomes.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree/diploma in Child and Youth Care Counselling, Education, Social Work, Recreation Management, and/or a combination of related education and experience.
• 2 years of experience working directly with vulnerable youth.
• Experience in client intake and assessment, case management and workshop facilitation.
• Experience within a team environment.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required.
• Current Emergency First Aid and CPR-C with AED certificate.

Responsibilities

• Ensures a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for participants.
• Collects information to confirm eligibility and completes participant intake and/or assessment to inform ongoing participant supports to reach participant and funder outcomes.
• Designs, implements, and evaluates youth-centered individual action plans, in-person services and workshops as per guidelines and funder mandates.
• Performs case management as per guidelines and funder mandates.
• Coordinates peer mentorships opportunities and relationships.
• Maintains knowledge of relevant services and community resources.

Education

Job description

Location: Work will primarily take place within School District 43 (Coquitlam) and School District 36 (Surrey), with travel between school and community sites as required.

The position offers flexibility to work remotely for administrative and office-based duties when an on-site presence is not required. Workspace is also available at the Robert Lee YMCA (955 Burrard St, Vancouver) or the Tong Louie

YMCA (14988 57 Ave, Surrey) for those who prefer an office-based work environment.

Term: Temporary, Full-Time

Hours: 35 hours per week

Shift: Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends based on program needs

Start Date: As soon as possible

End Date: December 31, 2027; possibility of extension based on program funding

Salary: $57,203.64 annually

Nature & Scope

The Youth Support Worker (YSW) provides vulnerable youth, leading up to and at critical academic transition points, with the community supports and life skill development they need for educational attainment and future success. Program delivery includes, but is not limited to, the development of youth-centered plans, facilitation of workshops, supportive counseling and the coordination of peer mentorship. The YSW uses an outreach model to meet youth within the community, at schools, local YMCA BC facilities or another appropriate site. The YSW is responsible for the effective planning, implementation, and evaluation of program services. The YSW carries out their duties in a professional manner and in accordance with all YMCA BC policies and procedures, standards of practice, health and safety standards, child protection standards and contractual, legal, and regulatory requirements.

Major Responsibilities -in this position, you will::

• Ensures a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for participants.
• Collects information to confirm eligibility and completes participant intake and/or assessment to inform ongoing participant supports to reach participant and funder outcomes.
• Designs, implements, and evaluates youth-centered individual action plans, in-person services and workshops as per guidelines and funder mandates.
• Performs case management as per guidelines and funder mandates.
• Consults with social workers, school administration, other professionals, and family/natural supports when appropriate.
• Coordinates peer mentorships opportunities and relationships.
• Maintains knowledge of relevant services and community resources.
• Engages with schools, community agencies, and other organizations to maximize services and resources to participants.
• Adheres to all Risk Management and Occupational Health and Safety requirements including Work Alone Policy and Procedures and the Children, Youth and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policies and Procedures.
• Inputs data accurately and timely into program designated database systems
• Work within defined program budgets
• Maintain accurate participant files in accordance with funder and YMCA BC guidelines
• Collect demographic, output and outcome data for evaluation purposes and to inform and contribute to the development of funder and YMCA reports.

Qualification -you bring::

• Post-secondary degree/diploma in Child and Youth Care Counselling, Education, Social Work, Recreation Management, and or/ a combination of related education and experience.
• 2 years of experience working directly with vulnerable youth
• Experience in client intake and assessment, case management and workshop facilitation
• Experience within a team environment
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Motivational Interviewing, Suicide Intervention Certification an asset
• Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required
• Working knowledge of issues/practices related to the social determents of health, youth development, individual assessment, case management, group work, group facilitation, program planning and outcome evaluation
• Working knowledge in culturally sensitive and trauma-informed practice, and strength-based approach
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team skills
• Working knowledge computer skills (Windows, Microsoft Teams, Office and Outlook)
• Experience working with youth 12-19
• Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with youth participants, staff and volunteers; excellent written communication skills
• Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
• Access to a vehicle an asset
• Current Emergency First Aid and CPR-C with AED certificate
• Fluency in another language is an asset. Especially French.
• Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
