Job description

The Youth Support Programmer is a crucial part of YW Calgary’s team, dedicated to supporting youth residing in our domestic violence crisis shelter and affordable housing program. This role involves developing, implementing, and evaluating engaging and impactful programs that cater to the diverse needs of young people. This position focuses on creating a structured, enriching, and trauma-informed environment that fosters resilience, emotional well-being, and positive growth for children and youth. This position works collaboratively with staff, families, and external resources to advocate for the needs of youth and ensuring their voices are heard and valued.


The role is based at YW Calgary's Crisis shelter, involving office work and program facilitation, typically full-time (37.5 hours/week), with flexible hours for evenings and weekends.


What You'll Do
  1. Assisting with program design, implementation, and evaluation of engaging, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive youth programs, including the afterschool program and other enrichment opportunities.
  2. Facilitate social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives to build resilience and emotional well-being in young people.
  3. Plan, execute, and participate in creative activities, workshops, and field trips that align with the interests and needs of youth.
  4. Ensure programs reflect the voices of participants by regularly engaging with them for feedback and input.
  5. Engage in continuous learning and growth in your understanding of social-emotional learning, youth development, and evidence-based practices.
  6. Act as a key advocate for the mental, emotional, and social well-being of youth within the shelter.
  7. Establish and foster relationships with families residing in the shelter.
  8. Collaborate with internal teams, including coordinators and navigators, to create holistic, impactful programming.
  9. Build and maintain relationships with external community organizations to enhance the support network available to families and youth.
  10. Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that prioritizes the individual and collective needs of youth.
  11. Assist the Supervisor with mentoring and supporting program staff, facilitating professional development opportunities to align with the program’s goals and based on program needs.
  12. Support data collection, reporting, and evaluation processes to measure program effectiveness and inform future improvements.
  13. Manage multiple tasks and priorities with strong organizational skills, ensuring efficient program delivery and alignment with the shelter’s mission and vision.
  14. Contribute to the development of strategic initiatives that enhance service delivery and promote organizational goals.
  15. Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary’s success in its programs and workplace.
  16. Understand and remain current with YW Calgary Health, Safety, and Wellness policies, practices, and protocols and ensure work is performed in alignment with YW’s culture.
What You'll Bring
  1. Diploma or degree in Child & Youth Care, Social Work, or a related Human Services field.
  2. Certifications in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and First Aid required, brain story and indigenous awareness or equivalent.
  3. Knowledge and experience working with youth.
  4. Experience in crisis intervention, domestic violence, suicide risk assessment, and mental health preferred.
  5. Experience working with vulnerable populations and familiarity with community resources.
  6. Specific skills and abilities/technical knowledge.
  7. Proficiency in computers, databases, and case notes.
  8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  9. Strong self-regulation and self-awareness in high-pressure crisis environments.
  10. Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
