Job description

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR – WELLINGTON GROUP HOME

PERMANENT PART-TIME (24 hours/week)

We are currently looking for a Youth Development Coordinator for our Wellington group home. This home is a new initiative that provides a safe and stable living environment with individualized support and around-the-clock care for sibling groups. The program will also have a strong cultural component, focusing on strengthening relationships and supporting Indigenous young people and their families toward reunification.

The Youth Development Coordinator will take on a caregiving role within the group home by providing a caring and nurturing home environment committed to ensuring daily needs are met in a safe and supportive way. The incumbent practices from a trauma‑informed framework to embed a youth‑development approach that is both strength‑based and relationship‑based. The role expects a collaborative, cooperative approach focused on the personal, social, cultural, and educational development of youth.

Through day‑to‑day care, case management, setting goals with youth, liaising with caseworkers, working with natural supports, and preparing youth for transition, the coordinator will teach life skills, help youth establish normal routines, and promote overall well‑being.

Key Aspects of This Role
  • Uphold a duty of care that prioritizes trauma‑informed principles to address the complex needs of children and youth who have experienced significant trauma.
  • Recognize and respond to trauma‑related behaviours with sensitivity and understanding, emphasizing safety, cultural connectedness, and relationship development.
  • Organize and coordinate general aspects of youth day‑to‑day needs (e.g., supporting youth with daily routines, attending school, setting up appointments, maintaining household duties such as meal preparation, laundry, and cleaning).
  • Teach and support individuals with activities such as hygiene, basic cooking, money management, shopping, and safety skills.
  • Facilitate physical, recreational, educational, social, cultural, and vocational activities.
  • Accompany and/or transport youth to appointments, shopping, school, employment, or leisure activities as required.
  • Support youth development through role modeling and teaching new skills.
  • Assist youth in navigating relationships with natural supports.
  • Provide stabilization through predictable structures, clear expectations, and positive behaviour support.
  • Case manage assigned youth, completing assessments, reporting, individualized case planning, and transition planning.
Ideal Candidate
  • A diploma or degree in Human Services or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant experience from youth work, family roles, community leadership, cultural involvement and learning, or lived experience.
  • A person who builds strong relationships, cares deeply about people, and is willing to learn alongside youth, families, and communities.
  • Knowledge of Natural Supports and Trauma‑Informed Practice Frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate relationships and connections where youth expand their personal support networks and find new meaningful relationships.
  • Proven skills in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, critical thinking, problem solving, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A good understanding of how trauma, grief, and loss can impact identity and connection with natural supports.
  • An understanding of expectations, principles, and philosophy around transition planning.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous people’s unique histories, languages, cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and knowledge systems – direct experience working with Indigenous youth, families, and communities is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to attend at least two staff meetings per month (these may fall outside of regular work hours).
  • Current standard First Aid Certification and Suicide Intervention Training.
  • Valid driver’s licence and adequate insurance coverage (minimum $2 million third‑party liability).
  • Three years of driving experience with a Class 5 licence.
  • Current Police and Child Protection checks (valid within the last six months).
