Job summary

Harbour Metals in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is seeking a yard supervisor to lead yard staff and ensure efficient operations. You will report to the Operations Manager, applying strong leadership, problem-solving, and safety practices while hands-on duties are required.

Experience with forklifts and heavy equipment is a plus as you guide daily activities and maintain site organization. Ideal candidates will bring 3+ years of staff management and a proactive, safety-conscious mindset in a busy metal

Qualifications

• Three+ years experience in staff management and planning.
• Experience in the steel service centre industry is an asset.
• Experience operating forklifts, bobcats, and other heavy equipment is an asset.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to find suitable solutions for productivity, environmental, safety-related, and employment issues.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
• Good problem solving and de-escalation skills.

Responsibilities

• Work with the Operations Manager to ensure proper staffing and training is in place to support on-going operations of the organization.
• Responsible for assessing the day-to-day needs of the yard/site employees and communicating with dispatch.
• Assign resources; employees, equipment and supplies to increase efficiency and productivity.
• Provide leadership and direction to improve safety and ensure safe work practices are implemented to address risks.
• Ensure compliance of all employees with safety requirements, instructions, and best work practices.
• Assist with daily operations of the yard and general duties.
• Maintain recycling yard and site organization.
• Train and direct employees in proper use of site equipment (forklift, bobcat, excavator).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the yard employees and ensuring operations are running efficiently. Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader with critical thinking and not be afraid to get their hands dirty by jumping in and helping where and when needed. Experience working with forklifts, bobcats, and other production related equipment is an asset.

Work Environment:

This position is based in a busy metal recycling yard and involves working around heavy machinery, moving vehicles, scrap metal, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions. All employees are expected to follow company safety procedures and contribute to a safe working environment.

Hours of Work:

Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. and Saturdays, 8:00AM - 12:00PM
