Job description

Responsible for performing a variety of highway maintenance services including but not limited to: pavements, bridges, culverts, drainage control structures, road side maintenance, traffic services, traffic control operations, asset condition inspections, vegetation control, snow & ice control operations in accordance with the requirements of the Route 1 Gateway Project, and as directed by the Area Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, the employee must be able to perform each duty as listed below:

  • Perform routine maintenance services including pavement maintenance (i.e. pot hole patching), bridge maintenance (i.e. bridge cleaning and flushing, erecting snow boards, repairing concrete spalls), culverts (i.e. repairing headwalls and replacing pipes), drainage control structures (i.e. cleaning catch basins), road side maintenance (slope repairs, litter control), traffic services (i.e. repairing ground mounted signs, repairing guide rails), and vegetation control (i.e. grass and brush cutting).
  • Perform snow and ice control maintenance services including the operation of equipment necessary to complete anti-icing, de-icing, plowing and snow removal operations.
  • Perform various asset condition surveys for guide rails, slopes, signs, culverts, bridges, illumination, etc., as located along the highway corridor.
  • Assist in road patrolling activities such as day or night time patrolling as directed by the Area Manager.
  • Operate a variety of mobile equipment for delivering snow and ice control services, vegetation control, etc., as needed to deliver routine maintenance services.
  • Operate light to heavy duty trucks with trailers as necessary for transporting staff, materials or other equipment.
  • Perform traffic control operations in strict compliance with the most recent NBDTI Work Area Traffic Control Manual (WATCM).
  • Follow safe work practices and standard operation procedures when delivering routine maintenance services.
  • Participate in training as required with respect to maintenance and operation of fleet equipment.
  • Perform pre and post trip inspection reports with respect to operating equipment in accordance with the Preventative Maintenance Equipment Plan.
  • Complete in-house training exercises with respect to highway maintenance activities.
  • Clean shops and equipment as required.
  • Available to respond to snow and ice control services or situations requiring emergency response within one hour of notification (Call-in).
  • Responsible for attending and successfully completing various training exercises with respect to routine maintenance activities (ie.Snowfighter Training Course).
  • Available to assist the Area Manager in the planning, scheduling and coordination of highway maintenance activities.
  • Perform administration duties such as reporting and recording hours of work via records and reports in accordance with the practices, processes and programs of the Route 1 Gateway Project.
  • Perform minor maintenance on equipment (i.e. changing cutting edges, cleaning equipment, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Area Manager.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: Prior experience is an asset
  • Certifications and Licences: Valid driver’s license and acceptable drivers abstract (Minimum of Class 3E)
