Job summary

East Gwillimbury is seeking a Winter Roads Labourer to support daily Public Works maintenance of Town roads and rights-of-way. This hands-on, year-round role involves winter maintenance to keep roads and sidewalks safe and relies on strong time management and teamwork.

The ideal candidate has at least 3 years in Public Works, operates equipment (pickup, sidewalk plow, tractor), and holds a Grade 12 education with a valid G license, plus knowledge of WHMIS and OHSA.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Public Works operation/construction environment.
• Experience operating various types of equipment such as pickup trucks, sidewalk plow or tractor.
• Must possess a minimum of grade 12 or equivalent education, with a class G driver’s license in good standing with Driver’s Abstract.
• Strong understanding of Health & Safety issues relevant to daily operations/equipment usage, WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Reporting to the Roads Supervisor, the Winter Roads Labourer will be responsible for daily routine Public Works maintenance of Town roads and rights-of-way in accordance with municipal standards and policies. This frontline position will play an important role in the delivery of the Town’s winter maintenance program to ensure safe roads and sidewalks. Public Works related maintenance and construction activities will include but not limited to work activities related to roads, storm sewers, catch basins, ditches, sidewalks, and storm facilities.

You have the ability to work both individually and with limited supervision in a year-round outdoor hands-on work environment, and as part of a larger Public Works team. Proficient use of large construction equipment, time management skills and flexibility are necessary in adjusting between varieties of duties. This position may include shift work and will require standby to respond to unforeseen operational events, especially during winter months. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, communication, public relations and problem-solving skills are essential.

Preferred candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a Public Works operation/construction environment and experience operating various types of equipment such as a pick-up truck, sidewalk plow or tractor; possess a minimum of grade 12 or equivalent education, with a class G driver’s license in good standing with Driver’s Abstract. Knowledge of construction is required, with training in the operation of related tools and equipment. A strong understanding of Health & Safety issues relevant to daily operations/equipment usage, along with knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety Act is required.

Rate: $31.28 - $32.53/hour
