Job summary

Nova Scotia Department of Public Works is seeking Spare Winter Equipment Operators for Halifax East bases: Spry Bay, Middle Musquodoboit, and Chezzetcook. Training provided, followed by paid plowing tasks under supervision. You may be placed in different zones depending on need.

Two years’ experience and a Class III license with air brake endorsement are required. Driving assessment and pre/post-trip inspections form part of the process, with guaranteed wage options during the winter season.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience or an equivalent education, training, and relevant experience.
• Minimum of Class III license with air brake endorsement.
• Reading and writing skills are required to understand department documentation and to complete daily logs.
• Helpful: professional driving course, hydraulic systems/mechanical skills, heavy equipment training, and experience with salt/spread systems.

Responsibilities

• Operate snow removal equipment (snowplows, graders, loaders) and perform daily inspections and logs.
• Perform routine maintenance of equipment and assist with signs, road surface repairs, and traffic control as needed.
• Follow training outcomes and safety protocols during winter operations.
