Job summary

SGS is seeking a lab technician in Burnaby, Canada, to join our geochemistry lab operations. The role requires afternoons and overnight shifts, weekends, and strict adherence to SOPs, safety and quality controls.

You will perform decomposition, leaching, reagent preparation, calibrations, and document results in SLIMS while maintaining clean workspaces. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma (chemistry-related education preferred) and up to 3 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma; chemistry-related education preferred.
  • 0-3 years of relevant work experience required or equivalent through education.

Responsibilities

  • Perform decomposition and leaching methods per SOPs (acid digests, selective leaches, fusions).
  • Prepare basic reagents and verify calibrations on lab equipment.
  • Enter QC results into SLIMS and maintain organized records.
  • Keep work area clean; report damaged equipment and ensure proper disposal.
  • Notify supervisor when consumables are low and assist in other lab areas as needed.

Job Description

Please note this position requires afternoons and overnights. Weekends included.

  • Perform a variety of decomposition and leaching methods as per SGS’ Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). These will include acid digests, selective leaches, fusions and others as required.
  • Make basic reagents as necessary.
  • Provides feedback to supervisors and/or group leader regarding any issues encountered during procedures. E.g., unanticipated reactions, loss of samples etc.
  • Verify and adjust calibrations on a variety of lab equipment including dispensers, pipettes, balances and other.
  • Ensure that work order documentation is complete in every respect and QC results are entered into SLIMS as necessary.
  • Maintain clean and organized workbench area ensuring spills are immediately cleaned; disposal is handled according to laboratory procedures including any special requirements for handling international soils.
  • Clean labware as required.
  • Ensure that equipment is maintained in good order making the supervisor or group leader aware of any damaged or defective equipment or any equipment requiring complex adjustment.
  • Notify supervisor when consumables are nearing depletion to ensure they are reordered.
  • Keep all records and notebooks in good order including work order and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Adhere to assigned working hours unless otherwise approved by the Supervisor.
  • May be asked to work in other areas of the Geochemistry laboratory sections when required.
Qualifications
  • Education: Minimum High school diploma is required but degree or diploma (or equivalent) in Chemistry related field is preferred .
  • Experience: 0-3 years of relevant work experience required or equivalent experience through education.
Additional Information

Salary: starting at $20.50 per hour.
