About the Role:

Reporting to the Chair, Department of Biological Sciences , the Wet-laboratory Supervisor, Biology (BIOL) implements the wet-laboratory component of undergraduate courses and provide s teaching support for graduate students. This involves purchasing , inventorying, and maintaining wet-lab equipment and supplies; training and monitoring teaching supports in laboratory techniques; developing and writing laboratory experiments and manuals that complement the lecture component of the courses; designing examinations and quizzes and keeping content and resources current. The incumbent provides safe, quality laboratory experiences for students working in BIOL wet labs and supervises numerous teaching assistants and lab demonstrators in executing and completing their duties. The Wet-laboratory Supervisor provides research support to Principal Investigators and their Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) through the maintenance of shared equipment and providing training on common methodological techniques .

T he Wet-laboratory Supervisor will:

  • Provide support for graduate students and undergraduate teaching activities in BIOL wet labs;

  • Prepare samples, buffers and reagents as required for each course-specific lab practice, set-up and take down lab equipment, organize workstations with the assistance of the junior laboratory technician, and ensure sufficient materials are available for students to perform their studies in small groups;

  • Prepare lab experiments that are current and relevant to the course curricula ( i.e. designing, testing, researching, writing pedagogically sound experiments, etc. );

  • Prepare and periodically review/revise lab manuals and standard operating procedures (SOP’s), ensuring equipment is up-to-date and reflect course content directly associated with the laboratory;

  • Organize and create lab assignments and student assessments for the courses assigned, including updates to materials as necessary (i.e., quizzes, presentations, written and practical lab exams, etc. );

  • Facilitate the recruitment and selection of Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Lab Demonstrators (LDs) for undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Biological Sciences (BIOL );

  • Schedule and direct the work of TAs/LDs (i.e., coordinate and assign teaching and marking duties within a lab section, supervise their activities, provide direction as required , etc. );

  • Prepare and distribute lab instruction notes, teaching aids (i.e., pre-lab presentations, videos, etc.), and marking schemes and/or rubrics;

  • Provide one-on-one educational assistance and offer weekly office hours to answer questions on laboratory objectives and learning outcomes for both students and TA’s/ LDs;

  • Test and troubleshoot the performance of all lab materials and ensure they are in optimal working condition in advance of each lab session (i.e., biological, chemical, and physical, etc. );

  • Run, maintain , troubleshoot, diagnose, design custom equipment and facilitate repairs on malfunctioning laboratory equipment by coordinating with Brock Technical Services (i.e., Machine, Electronics, Glassblowing Shops etc. );

  • Provide support to Principal Investigators (PI) and their respective HQP with the maintenance and upkeep of common shared equipment;

  • Oversee, administer, and manage the annual student fee earnings and lab budget (e.g., $20/student lab fee) while ensuring the budget remains within allocation ;

  • Manage course budgets in Workday (i.e., submit expense reports and keep P-cards in good standing, etc. );

  • Maintain and record student grades related to laboratory activities and assessments in the current learning management platform (e.g., Brightspace );

  • Responsible for anywhere from 30 – 1100 students per course ;

  • Remain up-to-date on undergraduate policy and regulations, the Faculty Handbook, and Office of Registrar policy and procedures;

  • Participate on University, Faculty, or departmental committees (i.e., undergraduate curriculum committee, NSERC/OGS award committee, strategic mandate development committee, the Scientifically Yours Conference committee, Senate, and Biosafety committee).

Please note: Occasional evenings and weekends may be required for this position.

The Wet-Laboratory supervisor is n ormally responsible for the laboratory component of two (minimum) to four (maximum) half-credit courses, per academic year .

Key S kills and Experience :

  • A completed MSc in Biological Sciences;

  • Laboratory demonstrating and supervisory experience, including practical experience with standard biological laboratory instrumentation;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of biological laboratory concepts, practices, and pedagogy;

  • Knowledge of chemical safety, experimental procedures, and different instrument operations;

  • Proficiency in standard computer programs and software, including Microsoft Office, Brightspace, Turnitin, Compusense , Workday, and databases

  • Ability to attend teaching, technology, and ethics seminars and incorporate concepts into teaching practice;

  • Ability to teach and supervise students and teaching assistants;

  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations, including fires, chemical burns, and spills; and

  • Ability to follow the CUPE 4207 Unit 1 Collective Agreement ;

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including discretion, and confidentiality;

  • Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organizational skills, with the ability to adhere to strict deadlines and keep accurate records;

  • Ability to develop creative laboratory curricula with in budget limitations.

Preferred or Asset Skill s:

  • Current first aid certification;

  • Mental health training certification

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade M , Salary Scale ( $ 73,245-$118,776 );

  • Target Hiring Range: $ 73,245-$79,000
