Job summary

Platinum Marine Group in Surrey, BC, is seeking a Welding & Fabrication Working Lead to coordinate and perform hands-on welding on marine new build and refit projects. You will guide the team, interpret drawings, select materials, and ensure safety and quality on schedule.

This role requires 5–7 years of marine welding experience, leadership ability, and knowledge of ABS/Lloyd’s standards. Day shifts with comprehensive benefits and on-site parking are offered at our South Surrey yard.

About The Role

The Welding & Fabrication Working Lead is a hands‑on technical leader responsible for coordinating and performing welding and fabrication work on marine new build and refit projects. This role requires strong practical knowledge of welding, fabrication methods, materials, and marine new build and refit work, with the ability to assess work requirements, determine appropriate fabrication and welding approaches, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical direction to the welding team. The Working Lead works closely with the South Surrey Project Manager, yard team, other trades, and subcontractors to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Work Planning and Hands‑on Execution

• Assess, plan, coordinate, and perform welding and fabrication work for new build and refit projects.
• Determine appropriate materials, fit‑up, weld sequencing, and fabrication methods.
• Provide hands‑on technical direction and troubleshoot welding and fabrication issues as they arise.

Technical Oversight and Quality Control

• Work with the Project Manager, Engineering, other trades, and subcontractors to interpret drawings and resolve technical challenges.
• Ensure work meets drawings, specifications, welding procedures, classification standards, and internal quality requirements.
• Inspect fit‑ups and completed work for quality, defects, and distortion.

Leadership and Team Development

• Provide hands‑on technical leadership, direction, and support to welders and fabricators.
• Monitor productivity, workmanship, attendance, and performance, and address issues with the appropriate manager.

Safety and Compliance

• Ensure compliance with company safety policies, safe work procedures, and regulatory requirements, including WorkSafeBC requirements.
• Follow and support the development and application of welding procedures (WPS) and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
• Ensure safe operation and proper maintenance of welding equipment, tools, and work areas.

Materials and Equipment Management

• Identify and coordinate welding consumables, materials, tooling, and equipment required for assigned work to maintain productivity and minimize downtime.
• Assist with estimating labour, materials, and equipment requirements for welding and fabrication work as required.
• Coordinate welding and fabrication activities with other South Surrey trades to support efficient workflow.

Qualifications And Experience

• Minimum 5-7 years of progressively responsible welding and fabrication experience, preferably with significant marine new build and refit, or vessel fabrication experience.
• Demonstrated ability to assess welding and fabrication work, determine an appropriate approach, and provide credible technical direction to other welders.
• Strong practical knowledge of welding techniques, fabrication processes, fit‑up, weld sequencing, distortion control, materials, and blueprint/drawing interpretation.
• Experience with aluminum and steel fabrication; marine experience is strongly preferred.
• Previous lead hand, working lead, foreman, or similar leadership experience preferred.
• CWB certification or equivalent welding qualifications preferred; experience working to classification standards such as ABS, Lloyd's, or equivalent is a strong asset.
