Qualifications

Job description

Located on the land of the Halq'eméylem-speaking peoples, New Westminster continues to be a growing and innovative city within Metro Vancouver. Our Parks and Recreation department is seeking motivated, dynamic, and passionate fitness-minded individuals to join our fitness program and services team.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Fitness Supervisory team, you will monitor and support the safe use of equipment in the fitness centre, ensure cleanliness of group fitness, indoor cycling, and fitness centre equipment and spaces, and provide high-quality customer service.

Core Responsibilities
  1. Monitor fitness areas to ensure patrons abide by rules and use equipment safely.
  2. Respond to incidents and emergencies, provide first aid as needed, and complete appropriate documentation.
  3. Maintain cleanliness and safety of the environment, report equipment repairs.
  4. Communicate effectively with the Fitness Supervisory team.
  5. Complete shift cleaning tasks and documentation.
  6. Provide orientations and instructions to patrons on exercise equipment use.
Qualifications and Attributes
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C.
  • BCRPA/CFES weight training module or equivalent certification; consideration given to certifications from Canfitpro, CSEP, ACE, ACSM, NSCA.
  • Additional specialized fitness certifications are an asset.
  • Experience with cleaning and janitorial tasks in a fitness setting.
  • Physically fit with the ability to lift weights and perform continuous cleaning tasks.
  • Experience in providing training and guidance to patrons.
  • Ability to instruct on equipment use, rules, and safety.
  • Knowledge of exercise programs, body mechanics, and injury prevention.
  • Ability to assist individuals and groups, including those with special needs, and demonstrate exercises.
  • Some knowledge of MS Office and Xplor Recreation is an asset.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on fitness equipment.
  • Ability to pass and maintain a Police Information Check, including vulnerable sector screening.
