Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Area Supervisor or Operations Manager, the incumbent is responsible for operating a backhoe to assist with snow removal and other winter maintenance tasks.

The pay range for this position is $24-$26 hourly, depending on experience and qualifications.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate backhoe equipment safely and efficiently for snow removal and other winter maintenance tasks.
• Perform routine maintenance checks on equipment to ensure proper functioning and report any issues.
• Clear snow and ice from roads, sidewalks, bus stops, and any drainage components in accordance with project specifications.
• Collaborate with team supervisor and other team members to complete tasks in a timely manner.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
• Assist with de-icing and salting operations as needed.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Report progress and any obstacles encountered to the supervisor.

• Required to be available for emergency response rotations as needed for overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Skilled in the use of hand and power tools, traffic control devices and mobile equipment such as tractors, graders, mowers, sweepers, augers and other types of equipment used for surface and right‑of‑way maintenance and repair.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of three (3) years related work experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial/industrial repair, maintenance or landscaping (outdoor work) (Preferred).
• Experience operating a backhoe in winter maintenance (Preferred).

Certifications and License

• Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Valid Backhoe Operator certification (Asset).
• Successful completion of training in traffic control methods, first aid, transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS and job‑related aspects of Occupational Health.

Work Conditions/Physical Demands

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
• Use manual and powered pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and electric powered tools and equipment.
• Routine exposure to outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
• Occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places; fume or airborne particles. Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, frequent exposure to insects and infrequent exposure to reptiles/rodents, noise level usually moderate but on occasion can be more than moderate.
• Highly developed sense of safety awareness and perceptive ability. Must recognize hazards inherent in routine and non‑routine tasks and make adjustments to avoid loss, injury or accident. Must communicate safety instructions with co‑workers, think clearly and focus on safety while using tools and equipment and when driving or operating equipment. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the job.
