Job summary

Recrute Action is seeking a Senior Backend Java Engineer to drive the design, development and deployment of REST APIs and microservices. You will work with Docker/Kubernetes, Kafka and a modern DevOps stack to deliver scalable solutions in the insurance sector.

The role requires 5+ years of Java experience, strong API knowledge, and experience coordinating teams across multiple sites. This 12-month contract offers hybrid work in Waterloo, ON, with on-site presence as needed.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary diploma or degree in Computer Science.
• 5+ years of development experience incl. full lifecycle.
• Strong Java APIs, REST, SOAP, Spring, JSON, OpenAPI, Swagger.
• 1+ years with DevOps tools (Jenkins, Artifactory, BitBucket, Maven, CI/CD, Ansible).
• 1+ years Kafka/Kafka Streams (KSQL).
• Experience coordinating teams across sites.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, deployment of Java REST web services and microservices using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Ensure service designs follow approved architecture.
• Learn and incorporate emerging API technologies.
• Build event-driven services using Kafka.
• Utilize CD/CI tools (Jenkins, Artifactory, BitBucket, Gradle, CD Director, Ansible).
• Mentor and support colleagues.
• Identify defects and debug resolutions.
• Support existing APIs built on WebSphere, DB2, Java UI as needed.

What’s in it for you

Responsibilities

• Lead and participate in the design, development, deployment of Java REST web service APIs and microservices using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Ensure service designs follow approved architecture.
• Learn and incorporate emerging API technologies into our APIs.
• Build event driven services using Kafka.
• Use and enhance our Dev Ops tools and processes for CD/CI, these tools include Jenkins, Artifactory, BitBucket, Gradle, Continuous Delivery Director, Ansible.
• Mentor and support colleagues in their capabilities.
• Identify defects in services, debug and provide effective solutions to resolve the defects.
• When required, support existing APIs built on older technologies e.g., Websphere, DB2, Java UI etc.

Required qualifications

• Post-secondary diploma or degree in Computer Science.
• More than 5 years of development experience and progressive information technology experience, including full application development life cycle and systems integration experience.
• Strong working experience with Java APIs, REST, SOAP, Spring, JSON, Open API, Swagger, web services, and web hosting technologies.
• 1+ years of experience using DevOps tools, including Jenkins, Artifactory, BitBucket, Maven, CDD, and Ansible.
• 1+ years of experience with Kafka and/or Kafka Streams, including KSQL.
• Experience managing and coordinating team activities in a multi-site environment.

• Experience with WebSphere, DB2, Java UI technologies including Swing and Spring MVC, and SonarQube for static code analysis.
• Exposure to Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) integration architectures and technologies.
