Toronto Animal Services is hiring a Web Content Coordinator to help shape how we engage with the public and promote animal welfare across our digital platforms.
In this unique role, you'll be part of a dynamic team, creating, managing, and enhancing content that supports our programs, services, and public education efforts.

Please note: As this role is based in an animal shelter environment, candidates should be aware that they will be exposed to animal noise, fur/dander and occasionally odours. Candidates will also be in direct contact with all species of animals in our care. We want to ensure all interested applicants are comfortable with and informed about these working conditions.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Writes and edits creative copy for a variety of interactive media including the Internet, Intranet, social media, Multimedia presentations, and other promotional tools.
  • Ensures that content within the division's internet and intranet sites are integrated, accurate and current. Provides evaluation and analysis of web use statistics and client feedback.
  • Provides expertise and develops and implements guidelines for the structure of information within applications and systems.
  • Consults with business units and provide support to project teams to determine business unit information and web-based service to identify solutions to meet business requirements. Develops, redesigns, and improves workflows, methodologies and processes for maintenance and development of quality information and content.
  • Plans, executes and documents user interviews and usability tests.
  • Creates and presents user personas, user experience scenarios and test cases.
  • Develops, documents, implements and monitors adherence to web development and information management standards including style guides, metadata standards, taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and other classifications systems for navigation or other categorization needs.
  • Assists with the maintenance and development of content libraries consisting of information and design assets in the form of text, photography, graphics, video and audio.
  • Ensures that content providers are trained in writing for the Web by setting standards. Develops, delivers and evaluates training programs and materials.
  • Assists in the development of marketing and communications strategies, including coordinated workplans and editorial schedules across multiple channels, including social media.
  • Provides expertise in the development and support of new web-based products and services as the division's information needs evolve.
  • Ensures that legal and legislated standards are upheld (e.g. the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Trademarks Act and the Copyright Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act).

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Post-secondary education in Marketing, Communications, Digital Media or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in content creation, digital marketing, and social media management.
  • Experience writing online content aligned with corporate standards and maintaining brand consistency.
  • Proficiency with at least five of the following: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat), Canva, Hootsuite, or other related graphic design, video editing, and web development tools.

You must also have:

  • A valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver’s Licence, maintained in good standing, and the ability to obtain the required City Operator’s Permit for assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • The ability to travel to various sites and/or work locations throughout the City of Toronto.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, vendors, and partners.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with a strong aptitude for technical writing, editing, and content development.
  • Proven ability to take initiative, work independently, and stay current with emerging trends and practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to respond to competing priorities in a fast-paced, results-oriented team environment.
  • Ability to work comfortably and safely in an animal shelter environment, including in close proximity to a variety of animals.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare practices, pet care, and familiarity with common domestic and wildlife species—including dog and cat breeds.
  • Understanding of municipal Animal By-Laws and the goals and objectives of Animal Services.
  • Knowledge of web and social media analytics, including the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and prepare reports.
  • Creative ability to conceptualize and develop engaging, animal-focused content across multiple platforms.
  • Familiarity with social media trends and digital tools, and the ability to propose and implement innovative content strategies.
  • Experience writing and editing content for web platforms, with a solid understanding of digital accessibility requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience using web-based document and content management systems such as SharePoint or OpenText.
  • Strong understanding of records, email, and electronic document management principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant government legislation, including the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA).
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), particularly the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR), as it applies to digital and communications content.
  • A commitment to upholding the values of the Toronto Public Service, including equity, diversity, inclusion, and respectful workplace practices.
