Summary

To perform a variety of skilled, technical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Water Distribution System, Wastewater Collection System, and Storm Water Collection Systems.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Involved in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of Utilities Transmission assets, water distribution, wastewater, and storm collection and treatment assets.
  • Work under the supervision of the Supervisor but may operate independently without direct oversight.
  • May be required to work on call or standby shifts for emergency response outside regular hours to ensure community service levels.
  • Transfer knowledge between team members to ensure continuity across Distribution, Collection, and Transmission assets.
  • Plan, execute, and complete water and wastewater emergency and scheduled work within specified timeframes and budgets, ensuring compliance with specifications and design, and considering private property owners.
  • Respond to emergent repairs, coordinate with contractors, and ensure necessary permits and agreements are in place before work begins.
  • Inspect work in accordance with Strathcona County’s standards, including site cleanup and landscaping.
  • Review contractor invoices for accuracy, and oversee multiple contractors across various sites.
  • Provide project cost estimates and monitor budget expenditures in collaboration with the supervisor.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors regarding operational, capital, and emergency expenditures.
  • Make decisions considering social, environmental, and economic impacts.
  • Deliver services reflecting Strathcona County’s standards, maintaining excellent public relations and on-site communication.
  • Update supervisors on repairs, schedules, and budgets; handle customer concerns professionally.
  • Complete hazard assessments and safety inspections, adhering to safety regulations.
  • Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and respect in all work activities.
  • Provide cost estimates and obtain approvals before construction-related activities.
  • Perform operational duties as a Water and Wastewater Operator as needed.
Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Alberta Environment certification, preferably through NAIT’s Water and Wastewater Technician Program.
  • Alberta Environment Operator Certification: Wastewater Treatment Level I, Water Distribution Level III, and Wastewater Collection Level III (or actively pursuing these certifications).
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in water and wastewater construction, installation, and repair.
  • Prime Contractor and Ground Disturbance training are assets.
  • Ability to maintain good public relations during interactions with customers and the public.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements, especially confined space entry.
  • Strong knowledge of operation and maintenance of water distribution, storm, and wastewater facilities.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, with strong administrative skills.
  • Physical capability to perform labor-intensive tasks.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license with a 5-year Driver’s Abstract showing fewer than 7 demerits.
  • Ability to perform physical labor and stand or walk for extended periods.

Salary Range

$42.30 to $46.78 per hour, as per AUPE Collective Agreement.
