Job summary

UBC Student Housing and Community Services is seeking a Refrigeration Mechanic to maintain and troubleshoot HVAC, refrigeration, cooling, and environmental control systems across SHCS facilities.

You will report to the Trades Manager and ensure critical systems such as data centre cooling and lab environmental chambers run safely and efficiently while mentoring apprentices.

Qualifications

• Certification as Red Seal or BCTQ Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic.
• 3–5 years of related experience in an industrial setting.
• Valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence.
• Strong mechanical trades knowledge and troubleshooting ability.
• Able to work in a team and meet deadlines.
• Desirable: 4th Class Power Engineer certificate.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose electrical and mechanical failures on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
• Test and optimize equipment performance after repairs.
• Install and commission new HVAC machinery and equipment such as heat pumps and air conditioners.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections.
• Maintain data centre cooling and environmental control systems, labs, chillers, towers and heat recovery equipment.
• Read schematics, blueprints and manuals; create written reports.
• Follow maintenance procedures and WorkSafe practices to keep a safe workplace.
• Act as a trainer and mentor for apprentices.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose electrical and mechanical failures on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment
• Test and optimize equipment performance after repairs
• Install and commission new HVAC machinery and equipment, such as heat pumps and air conditioners
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections
• Maintain, calibrate, and repair data centre cooling and environmental control systems, environmental chambers, lab coolers and freezers, chillers, cooling towers, condensers, and heat recovery equipment
• Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and operating manuals; create written reports
• Follow all maintenance procedures, regulatory codes, and WorkSafe practices to keep a safe workplace
• Act as a trainer and mentor for apprentices

Qualifications

• Red Seal or BCTQ Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic certification
• 3-5 years of related experience in an industrial setting
• Valid BC Class 5 driver's licence
• Thorough knowledge of mechanical trades practices and procedures; demonstrated troubleshooting ability
• Able to work in a team, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines
• Desirable: 4th Class Power Engineer certificate

Annual salary $87,156.00

Overtime paid at double time where applicable
