Job summary

UBC Student Housing and Community Services is seeking a Refrigeration Mechanic to maintain and troubleshoot HVAC, refrigeration, cooling, and environmental control systems across SHCS facilities. You will diagnose failures, install new equipment, and mentor apprentices while ensuring safe, reliable operation of critical systems including data centre cooling and lab environments.

Annual salary is $87,156.00 with overtime paid double time where applicable.

Qualifications

• Red Seal or BCTQ Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic certification is required.
• 3–5 years of related experience in an industrial setting.
• Valid BC Class 5 driver's licence.
• Thorough knowledge of mechanical trades practices and procedures; demonstrated troubleshooting ability.
• Able to work in a team, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines.
• Desirable: 4th Class Power Engineer certificate.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose electrical and mechanical failures on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
• Test and optimize equipment performance after repairs.
• Install and commission new HVAC machinery and equipment, such as heat pumps and air conditioners.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections.
• Maintain, calibrate, and repair data centre cooling and environmental control systems, environmental chambers, lab coolers and freezers, chillers, cooling towers, condensers, and heat recovery equipment.
• Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and operating manuals; create written reports.
• Follow all maintenance procedures, regulatory codes, and WorkSafe practices to keep a safe workplace.
• Act as a trainer and mentor for apprentices.
