What will you be doing!

  • Identifying and addressing gaps in existing Waste Management Program requirements, processes and CNL facilities (nuclear & non-nuclear).
  • Developing and implementing appropriate Waste Management Program requirements and procedures to address identified gaps or opportunities for improvement.
  • Assisting in the development of processes to conduct verification and assessment of waste management practices.
  • Conducting site and facility level Waste Management Function compliance verifications and Waste Management Assessments of Waste Generators and Waste Receivers, with the objectives to identify non-compliances and opportunities for improvement.
  • Establishing, documenting, and maintaining a system to compile site-specific Function measures, waste data and records, including preparation of periodic summary reports.
  • Advising staff and managers on Waste Management Program requirements and assist the staff and managers on meeting the requirements.
  • Communicating Function requirements and opportunities for improvement through a) assisting in developing and delivering Waste Management Function Training, and b) presentations on Waste Management Function requirements at employee (safety, branch, interest group) meetings.
  • Maintaining cross-functional knowledge spanning the various specialty areas associated with CNL’s Waste Management Program (including radiological, non-radiological, hazards and non-hazardous wastes; waste storage and disposal options and facilities; waste minimization and reduction practices; international practices with regard to the long-term management of waste).
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education: Bachelor (Honours) in Science or Engineering from a university of recognized standing or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Experience: Minimum of basic computer skills, including working knowledge of MS Office Suite and familiarity with databases. Experience/knowledge of Waste Management processes and procedures would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: High level of motivation; can work independently and in a team environment. Good writing skills; proven ability to prepare documents promptly. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to develop and deliver presentations. Working knowledge of Environmental and/or Quality Management Systems (e.g., ISO-14001 or ISO-9000), Nuclear Safety & Control Act, regulations associated with radiological waste, Federal and Provincial environmental protection laws and regulations, nuclear facility operations, and the types and characteristics of wastes associated with the operation of a nuclear laboratory are highly desirable. Must be Radiation Protection (RP) Group 3 qualified (or be able to be RP Group 3 qualified once hired).
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required: Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to wear protective clothing and conduct assessments within nuclear facilities, including Waste Management Areas.

Location:

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires regular work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site while also permitting the employee to spend the majority of their time working remotely, should they so desire. CNL employees who choose to work remotely the majority of the time are provided with the equipment required to be successful at their remote workplace (laptop, chair, monitor, etc.); however, they are not provided a dedicated onsite office. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley. It affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
