What will you be doing!

  • Identifying and addressing gaps in existing Waste Management Function requirements, processes, and procedures through observations, assessments, and reviews at CNL’s sites and through benchmarking against other non-CNL facilities (nuclear & non-nuclear).
  • Assisting in the development of processes to conduct verification and assessment of waste management practices.
  • Conducting site and facility-level Waste Management Function compliance verifications and Waste Management Assessments of Waste Generators and Waste Receivers, to identify non-compliances and opportunities for improvement.
  • Establishing, documenting, and maintaining a system to compile site-specific Function measures, waste data, and records, including preparation of periodic summary reports.
  • Communicating Function requirements and opportunities for improvement through
    • a) assisting in developing and delivering Waste Management Function Training and
    • b) presentations on Waste Management Function requirements at employee (safety, branch, interest group) meetings.
  • Interfacing with planning and technical staff in other parts of CNL to meet CNL needs in a coherent integrated manner, with a particular focus on the following organizations: Clean-up Function, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Integrated Waste Strategy (IWS), Facilities Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation, Fuel Program and Projects, Port Hope Area Initiative, Reactor Decommissioning, Waste Services and the Whiteshell Laboratories Closure Project.
  • Developing and/or supporting the development of technical plans for managing waste at various CNL sites across Canada.
  • Supporting the development of discrete deliverables and supporting work related to waste characterization, processing, packaging, transportation, and disposal.
  • Overseeing the work of subcontract resources in developing and completing technical deliverables.
  • Performing other duties in support of CNL’s Waste Management Function.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education:
    • At minimum, a Bachelors (Honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Experience:
    • Experience in collecting, analyzing and organizing complex data sets to make recommendations based on experience, industry-best practices or innovative approaches.
    • Resolving complex technical challenges, from both a strategic and execution-level perspective.
    • Experience in technical planning and execution of Environmental Remediation Management projects.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment, with stakeholders from across a large-scale organization.
    • Must have a positive attitude and a commitment to providing support to the team to ensure deliverables are effectively met on schedule and on-budget.
    • A quick-learner, and be willing to take various internal and external training courses related to waste management and/or project management.
    • Committed to transparent and meaningful engagement of stakeholders, with a demonstrated history of developing and maintaining long-term professional relationships.
    • Highly-disciplined and honest, and will be committed to high-quality delivery of assignments.
    • Exemplary work ethic that will be put towards helping the Waste Management Program Team realize its mandate and will be willing to support others in the division in realizing their objectives.
    • Practical working knowledge of the full range of Waste Acceptance Criteria of hazardous and radioactive waste facilities domestically and internationally.
    • Understanding of the Canadian nuclear industry, including the CNSC regulations and key projects/approaches that are being employed by partner organizations (such as the NWMO).
    • Knowledge of the interaction of planning, execution and close-out of multi-year projects.
    • Understanding of the full lifecycle of waste management and project management principles is an asset.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required:
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to wear protective clothing and conduct assessments within nuclear facilities, including Waste Management Areas.
  • This position will be primarily office-based, although there will be occasions that will require the Waste Management Program Officer to go into the field for walk-downs or support of field-work.
    • As a result, this position will be eligible for a long-term Remote Work arrangement.
  • This position will occasionally require working extended days and/or outside standard working hours (e.g., evenings or weekends) to support high priority operations activities (estimated at less than once per month).
  • Travel to offsite locations will be required.
