Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories seeks a Waste Advisor at Whiteshell, Manitoba to support waste management, ensure Waste Acceptance Criteria compliance, and guide waste through processing, storage, and disposal.

The role combines lab work, data analysis, and documentation with collaboration across waste generators and receivers, all within a fully onsite setting at the Whiteshell site.

Qualifications

• Education matching the position: advanced tech diploma with 6–8 years experience, or alternate pathway with 10–12 years.
• Experience analyzing technical data and historical records.
• Experience writing technical documents.
• Knowledge of nuclear waste management processes.
• Chemistry or radiochemistry knowledge is an asset.
• Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and in a team with good interpersonal skills.
• Security clearance eligibility (SASC reliability status).

Our Whiteshell location is seeking a Waste Advisor to play an integral role in CNL's waste management process, partnering with waste generators and receivers to ensure compliance with Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) and to support the safe processing, storage, and disposal of waste.

What will you be doing!

• Setting up and conducting experiments, tests and analyses using a variety of instruments and techniques.
• Operating and/or maintaining laboratory equipment and apparatus.
• Determining apparent causes of deviation in test data.
• Preparing or contributing to technical reports, memoranda and procedures.
• Creating and managing waste documents, such as the Waste Enquiry Form (WEF) and Waste Information Form (WIF), and guiding waste through the management process.
• Assisting waste generators in implementing local waste minimization initiatives to reduce overall waste generation.
• Assisting in developing and implementing procedures for waste segregation, processing, and packaging to enhance efficiency and compliance.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What We Are Looking For

• Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position and normally has six (6) to eight (8) years of pertinent technological experience. Or
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has ten to twelve (10-12) years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
• Experience
  • Experience analyzing technical data, including sample analysis results and historical records.
  • Experience in writing technical documents.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of nuclear waste management processes and streams.
  • Knowledge of chemistry and/or radiochemistry would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated good verbal and technical writing skills, as well as communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to effectively manage the variety of waste projects with demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work as part of a team, as well as the ability to work independently to accomplish tasks with excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to arrange/perform in-field waste walk-downs, oversee and lead waste generation activities, attend planning meetings, review and provide guidance to work planning.
  • Demonstrated capability of performing mathematical activities to calculate package activities as required.
  • Knowledge of soliciting, evaluating, and implementing advice on technical matters from staff and from technical and safety support groups.
  • Ability to work safely following company policies and procedures.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions

• Working schedule: We have a compressed workweek: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40)- hour workweek, starting at 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing (PPE&C) and conduct assessments within nuclear facilities, including Waste Management Areas.
• This position is part of the Whiteshell Technical Employees Group and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the WTEG Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
