Job summary

Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) is seeking a W & WW Shift Lead to supervise operations and maintenance at a high-capacity water treatment facility in Mississauga. You will direct staff, ensure safe operation of treatment systems, and uphold regulatory and environmental standards.

The role requires Class 1 Water Treatment certification, a valid G license, and the ability to work rotating shifts. Competitive pay and benefits are offered through OCWA’s Operator Career Path program.

In this role, you will be the group leader and direct staff in the operations and maintenance of advanced Class 4 water treatment facilities with a combined capacity exceeding 1200 MLD design daily flow. This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of all systems, process controls and other related equipment required to operate pumping stations and water treatment facilities. This position ensures compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations in order to protect the health of residents and for the protection of the environment.

Mandatory

• Minimum Class 1 Water Treatment as per O. Reg.128/04 of the Safe Drinking Water Act and have the ability to achieve certification to the highest level of the facility.


• Valid Class G Drivers licence.


• Ability to work on a rotating shift schedule or compressed work week.


• Must be able to respond to on-call within a reasonable period of time and work as ORO (Overall Responsible Operator).

Knowledge

• Excellent knowledge and experience in the principles and practices necessary in the operation and maintenance of advanced water distribution facilities and water treatment.


• Scheduled readings and recordings; monitoring local process conditions and equipment operations.


• Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions including storage of chemicals, confined space entry, equipment lockout/tagging and personal protective equipment.


• Knowledge of basic mathematics and chemistry including chemical dosing and process optimization in order to make calculations regarding chemicals and operating processes.


• Knowledge of water facilities operating methods, procedures and techniques and their practical application.


• Technical and electrical/mechanical knowledge.


• Excellent knowledge of computerized monitoring systems such as SCADA, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and overall computer literacy to record data from inspections and monitoring activities to complete work orders, project forms to initiate repairs for maintenance.

• Ability to correct operating discrepancies; to trace abnormal conditions or noise; to report major deviations or conditions that do not respond to normal corrective actions; and to determine from several choices the method to restore normal operating conditions.


• Good oral communication skills to report equipment problems or malfunctions in order to ensure the problem is conveyed and understood, and to provide direction for corrective response.


• Good written communication skills to write reports.


• Ability to read and interpret blueprints engineering drawings and follow process drawings to aid in troubleshooting equipment problems.


• Ability to use and understand operating and maintenance manuals, and other technical specifications.


• Physical dexterity to perform job duties in all weather conditions, in confined spaces and in dirty and/or noisy environments.


• Ability to plan and schedule operational tasks for the department under the guidance of the manager.
