Work Location & Requirements

This is a full-time, on-site position based in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Your Role

CBC Cape Breton seeks a video journalist to join our team. You are innovative, willing to try new workflows and story treatments that are informative and shareable. You will help our audience understand current events, adapt to the changing media landscape, and focus on engaging younger audiences through video strategy. Working from our Sydney newsroom under the direction of the Cape Breton senior producer, you will collaborate with producers and the Halifax assignment desk to research, produce, and present stories across digital, radio, and TV, ensuring adherence to journalistic standards and reflecting community diversity.

Key Tasks
  1. Pitch original story ideas and video treatments.
  2. Gather information from various sources.
  3. Conduct interviews.
  4. Plan, edit, and deliver videos, focusing on live and on-demand content.
  5. Understand shooting needs and edit recordings using available systems.
  6. Develop video strategies and workflows with newsroom leadership.
Qualifications

You possess:

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical journalism issues.
  • Understanding of effective video content for our audience.
  • Ability to generate original story ideas.
  • Strategies to make video content engaging for Cape Breton audiences.
  • Relevant education or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience with digital, social, radio, and TV news platforms.
  • Proven skills in writing, shooting, editing, and packaging compelling video stories.
  • Comfort with change and innovation.
  • Knowledge of and connections to equity-deserving communities in Cape Breton.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • On-air presence and ability to work under deadlines.
  • Teamwork skills and flexibility, including evenings and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license.
