About Us

At Toronto Business Development Centre (TBDC), we're at the center of Canada's fastest-growing startup ecosystem—where global founders come to scale, raise capital, and build their future. Through flagship programs like Horizon, Pivot, GoEU, and Land & Expand, we connect entrepreneurs with the partners, capital, and growth strategies they need to succeed. Learn more at www.tbdc.com.

As TBDC continues to strengthen Canada's position as a global destination for innovation, two flagship initiatives - GoEU and Horizon - are playing a critical role in connecting Europe's most promising startups with Canada's thriving innovation ecosystem.

Together, these programs are building meaningful partnerships across Europe and Canada, helping innovative companies expand internationally while creating long-term economic impact.

Job Description

The Venture Analyst, Origination will source, research, and qualify high-potential European founders for TBDC's programs through structured prospecting, data analysis, and ecosystem mapping. This means building and maintaining prospect databases, running cold outreach campaigns, preparing company intelligence briefs, and delivering pipeline reports and presentations to senior leadership. The role reports into the Venture Intake and Growth team.

If you thrive on turning data into deals, building outreach engines from scratch, and presenting sharp, data-backed recommendations to senior leadership, this is the role for you. You will sit at the intersection of analytics, research, and business development, powering the pipeline that brings the next wave of global founders to Toronto.

Key Responsibilities
Pipeline Research & Data
  • Research and identify high-potential startups across Europe through database mining, portfolio scraping, funding announcements, and event attendance lists.
  • Build and maintain structured prospect databases using tools such as Tracxn, Crunchbase, Dealroom, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Apollo.io, and Hunter.io.
  • Conduct desk research on individual companies and founders to prepare company intelligence briefs and preliminary assessments for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor funding rounds, product launches, and expansion signals to identify timely outreach opportunities.
Lead Qualification & Assessment
  • Due Diligence. Evaluate prospective companies against TBDC’s origination criteria: market readiness, expansion timing, product-market fit, founding team quality, North American market opportunity, stage alignment, and operational feasibility.
  • Prepare structured assessments and scoring summaries to support intake decisions by senior leadership.
  • Execute structured cold outreach campaigns via email, LinkedIn, and other channels to engage prospective founders and ecosystem partners.
  • Draft and personalize outreach sequences, follow-up cadences, and value-driven messaging aligned with Horizon and Pivot program positioning.
  • Manage prospect responses, schedule discovery calls, and hand off qualified leads to senior team members.
  • Track outreach performance (open rates, response rates, conversion rates) and iterate on messaging and targeting.
CRM, Reporting & Data Management
  • Maintain accurate and timely CRM records, including outreach activities, meetings, partnerships, opportunities, applications, and outcomes.
  • Monitor outreach performance and report on key performance metrics, including pipeline health, response rates, conversion rates, partnership activity, and application outcomes.
  • Ensure all work is recorded in Company-approved systems to support operational visibility, performance management, KPI reporting, and funding requirements.
  • Analyze performance data and continuously refine prospecting and partnership strategies based on measurable outcomes.
Requirements
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Computer Science, or Engineering (required).
  • Equivalent experience in business development, partnerships, or startup ecosystem engagement will also be considered.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms (HubSpot, Zoho, Salesforce, or similar) for lead tracking and reporting.
  • Strong working knowledge of lead generation and prospecting tools (e.g., Clay, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Tracxn, Crunchbase, Dealroom, Apollo.io, Hunter.io).
  • Advanced proficiency in Google Workspace (Sheets, Slides, Docs) and familiarity with tools like Airtable, Canva, and data visualization platforms.
  • Familiarity with APIs and frontier LLMs (e.g., Claude, GPT) for research automation, data enrichment, and workflow optimization.
  • Comfort working with large datasets and building structured trackers and dashboards.
Experience
  • 2 - 5 years of post-graduate experience in management consulting, venture capital, investment banking, or a related analytical role.
  • Exposure to startup ecosystems, accelerators, incubators, or venture capital is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct structured research, synthesize findings, and present recommendations clearly.
  • Experience with outbound prospecting or business development is an asset.
What Success Looks Like in Year One
  • We will define clear OKRs with you before you start, so you always know where you are driving. Broadly, success looks like:
  • The pipeline runs consistently. A steady, structured flow of qualified international startups entering the Horizon and Pivot funnel, sourced through cold outreach, database mining, ecosystem partnerships, and event-driven prospecting.
  • The top of the funnel grows. A meaningful volume of net-new qualified leads per quarter across target geographies, with measurable improvements in outreach response and conversion rates over time.
  • Assessments are sharp and reliable. Structured, well-researched company intelligence briefs and scoring summaries that senior members and leadership can act on for intake decisions, with consistent application of TBDC's origination criteria.
  • Leadership has full visibility. Clean, up-to-date pipeline dashboards and weekly reporting that give senior management a real-time picture of lead volume, outreach activity, and conversion metrics, with no gaps in CRM data.
