Job summary

Fort McKay Group of Companies LP is seeking a Utility Heavy Equipment Operator north of Fort McMurray, AB. The role focuses on safe, productive operation of heavy equipment on Civil Construction worksites, with routine maintenance and adherence to client policies.

We offer a 6 on/6 off schedule with 12-hour day and night shifts, plus overtime opportunities after 8 hours daily or 44 hours weekly. Camp accommodation is not provided; local position on Syncrude site continuity.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean three-year abstract.
  • At least 2+ years in an equipment operating role (civil construction/earthworks/utility).
  • Dozer experience is required.
  • Experience with Caterpillar D6–D8 dozer, 870 excavator, 988 loader, or 777 truck is an asset.
  • CSO/BSO/OSSA certification required.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English.
  • College/industry courses in heavy equipment operating are an asset.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Operate articulated trucks, dozers, excavators, or loaders to move earth and materials safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct pre/post-operational checks, keep equipment clean, perform basic maintenance.
  • Take direction from Team Lead or Shift Supervisor and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings and suggest safety improvements.
  • Inform supervisors of any required maintenance or repairs.
  • Maintain safe worksite and protect client/site personnel.

Summary: Under the direction of the Team Lead, the Utility Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the operations of equipment in a safe, productive, and efficient manner on a Civil Construction worksite according to the scope of the project and the work being performed. The operator will also keep clean and maintain the equipment and comply with all policies and procedures in the operation and securement of the equipment.

This is a safety-sensitive position that requires completion of pre-employment/pre-access testing. In additioin, this position may require the successful completion of clent training and a competency assessment.

Key Focuses:

  • Operate an articulated truck, dozer, excavator, or loader to move or displace earth, rock, gravel, or other materials during construction related activities in a safe, productive, and efficient manner.
  • Conduct pre-operational and post-operational checks on equipment, keep equipment clean, and perform any basic maintenance or troubleshooting as required.
  • Accept instructions from the Team Lead and/or Shift Supervisor as directed, and adjust work and strategy according to changing conditions, policies, and procedures as needed.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings, provide suggestions for improvement and safety.
  • Advise Team Lead or Shift Supervisor of any required maintenance or repairs of the equipment.
  • Maintain a safe disposition at all times, ensure the safety of the client site and more importantly, the safety of fellow personnel/drivers.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and requirements as laid out by the client at all times while on the worksite.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Retention of a valid class five (5) driver’s license and clean three (3) year drivers abstract is required
  • At least 2+ years of verifiable experience in an equipment operating role in a Civil Construction, Earthworks, or Utility environment.
  • Dozer experience is required.
  • Experience with various pieces of heavy equipment, specifically a Caterpillar D6 to D8 dozer, Caterpillar 870 (or similar) excavator, a Caterpillar 988 or John Deere 644 loader, or a Caterpillar 777 (or smaller) off-highway truck is an asset.
  • CSO or BSO or OSSA is required.
  • Ability to speak, write and read English is required
  • College or industry courses in heavy equipment operating is considered an asset
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
