Job summary

Fort McKay Group of Companies LP is seeking a Utility Heavy Equipment Operator to manage safe, productive operations on the Syncrude Aurora site north of Fort McMurray. The role requires pre/post checks, basic maintenance, and strict adherence to safety and client policies.

This safety-sensitive position demands a 6 on, 6 off shift (12-hour days/nights) with flights and camp accommodations not provided. Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada and hold a valid Class 5 license.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with clean 3-year abstract.
  • Minimum 2+ years operating equipment in Civil Construction/Earthworks/Utility.
  • Dozer experience is required.
  • Experience with Caterpillar D6–D8 dozers and other listed gear is an asset.
  • CSO/BSO/OSSA certification is required.
  • Ability to read/write/speak English.
  • College/industry heavy equipment courses are a plus.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently on a civil construction site.

  • Follow Team Lead/Shift Supervisor instructions and adapt to conditions.
  • Participate in toolbox talks and suggest safety improvements.
  • Notify lead about required repairs or maintenance.
  • Maintain a safe site and ensure client site and personnel safety.
  • Comply with client policies and site procedures.

Summary: Under the direction of the Team Lead, the Utility Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the operations of equipment in a safe, productive, and efficient manner on a Civil Construction worksite according to the scope of the project and the work being performed. The operator will also keep clean and maintain the equipment and comply with all policies and procedures in the operation and securement of the equipment.

This is a safety-sensitive position that requires completion of pre-employment/pre-access testing.

Key Focuses:

  • Operate an articulated truck, dozer, excavator, or loader to move or displace earth, rock, gravel, or other materials during construction related activities in a safe, productive, and efficient manner.
  • Conduct pre-operational and post-operational checks on equipment, keep equipment clean, and perform any basic maintenance or troubleshooting as required.
  • Accept instructions from the Team Lead and/or Shift Supervisor as directed, and adjust work and strategy according to changing conditions, policies, and procedures as needed.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings, provide suggestions for improvement and safety.
  • Advise Team Lead or Shift Supervisor of any required maintenance or repairs of the equipment.
  • Maintain a safe disposition at all times, ensure the safety of the client site and more importantly, the safety of fellow personnel/drivers.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and requirements as laid out by the client at all times while on the worksite.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Retention of a valid class five (5) driver’s license and clean three (3) year drivers abstract is required
  • At least 2+ years of verifiable experience in an equipment operating role in a Civil Construction, Earthworks, or Utility environment.
  • Dozer experience is required.
  • Experience with various pieces of heavy equipment, specifically a Caterpillar D6 to D8 dozer, Caterpillar 870 (or similar) excavator, a Caterpillar 988 or John Deere 644 loader, or a Caterpillar 777 (or smaller) off-highway truck is an asset.
  • CSO or BSO or OSSA is required.
  • Ability to speak, write and read English is required
  • College or industry courses in heavy equipment operating is considered an asset
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada

This is a full time position located north of Fort McMurray on Syncrude Aurora site.

Shift: 6 on, 6 off (3 days, 3 nights, 6 off- 12 hr shift)
