Job summary

The City of Brooks is seeking one Utility Operator in the Utilities Services Department. This full-time, union position operates a hydrovac/flusher truck to maintain underground piping and flushes sewer and storm lines.

You will perform preventive maintenance, keep records, manage traffic control, and report conditions to the Utility Foreman. Strong communication, reliability, and the ability to work independently are essential.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid class 3 driver's licence with Q endorsement.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Standard First Aid.
  • Confined Space Certificate.
  • H2S Certificate.
  • Ground Disturbance Certificate.
  • Equipotential Bonding Certificate.
  • Flag Person Certification.
  • Fall Protection.
  • Strong public relations, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willing to complete basic safety training.
  • Ability to operate computer systems related to waste water operations.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload including the ability to tolerate frequent interruptions and still meet deadlines.
  • Attention to details and strong prioritizing and multi-tasking skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of working outside in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding department and municipal matters.
  • Subject to a criminal record check.

Responsibilities

  • Operate hydrovac/flusher truck to maintain and expose underground piping.
  • Flush sewer and storm lines.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance on wastewater and storm collection system.
  • Maintain records for flushing schedule.
  • Maintain equipment according to approved standards and procedures.
  • Operate equipment including large equipment as assigned.
  • Work shift work as assigned.
  • Must be able to work with little to no supervision.
  • Report condition of the City’s infrastructure to the Utility Foreman.
  • Ensure proper traffic/pedestrian control at work site.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on Hydrovac/Flusher unit as in Maintenance Manual.
  • Must be able to improve flushing program.
  • Must be able to run sewer camera to observe condition of piping.

The City of Brooks requires one (1) Utility Operator, in the Utilities Services Department. This is a full-time permanent and union position.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:

This position operates hydrovac/flusher truck to maintain and expose underground piping as related to the Utility Department and flushes sewer and storm lines.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Ensures proper preventive maintenance of the wastewater and storm collection system.
  2. Operates skillfully and competently the hydrovac/flusher truck.
  3. Maintains related records for flushing schedule.
  4. Maintains equipment according to approved standards and procedures.
