Job summary

City-of-Chestermere seeks a Stormwater Operator to support upkeep, maintenance, and tracking of the city's storm infrastructure. This full-time role works within the Utilities team and focuses on safe operation of storm drainage systems, catch basins, culverts, and related assets.

Responsibilities include driving city vehicles, performing heavy manual labour, completing paperwork, and ensuring safety compliance under CUPE Local 5592. The position offers pay grade determined by placement.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or GED preferred.
  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Q-Air Brake endorsement and Drive’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the City.
  • Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the city.
  • Valid Standard First Aid CPR C and AED certification would be an asset.
  • Water or wastewater operator certification, or enrolment toward one.

Job description

As a member of the Utilities team, the Stormwater operator is responsible for providing assistance in the upkeep, maintenance and tracking of City's Storm infrastructure.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Handles tasks related to the City’s stormwater systems, prioritizing needs based on data, ensures proper functioning storm system; provides effective operations of storm drainage system by cleaning out catch basins and swales; culverts, and storm scepters addresses issues related to storm water discharge and drainage.
  • Operates city owned vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. (Pickup trucks, Hydro Vac, Skid steers, Etc.)
  • Perform heavy manual labour such as lifting and shoveling.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of utilities.
  • Complete paperwork and forms related to specific tasks.
  • Utilize various hand tools and power tools to complete tasks.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives, participate in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits, ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System, reports and assists in the analysis of near misses or incidents.
  • Appropriate and responsible use of confidential information; maintains confidentiality and security of all information related to the city.
  • Ensure “pre-trips” and Equipment Checklists are completed daily, and any equipment concerns are addressed.
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Education and Certifications:
  • Grade 12 or GED preferred.

  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Working Conditions:
  • Personal Protective Equipment required.
  • Physically demanding work, including standing and walking for extended periods of time.
