Job summary

Utilities Kingston is seeking a Substation Electrician in Kingston, Ontario. The role involves installing, maintaining and repairing substation and underground electrical power lines and equipment, plus fault diagnosis and rapid response to outages.

The ideal candidate will have 309A certification or MEARIE Substation Electrician Training Levels I-III, 6+ years of experience, and advanced knowledge of electrical systems and tools.

Responsibilities

• Prepare job site for construction and install new equipment per standards and in accordance with engineered drawings and plans.
• Assist in the commissioning of equipment and testing and document results.
• Complete switching to energize equipment and place it into service.
• Assist in the development of traffic control plans to ensure public and worker safety during the performance of construction and maintenance.
• Conduct annual inspections of substation and vault transformers and replace or repair identified issues.
• Complete pre-trip inspections on commercial vehicles prior to use and operate heavy equipment required to complete work.
• Complete disconnects and reconnects for customer service upgrades and maintenance.
• Respond to outages and emergencies consistent with required response times.
• Complete all required documentation to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Inspect electrical infrastructure to identify and diagnose issues before failures can occur.
• Troubleshoot issues and decide on the most effective solution.
• Collaborate with team members to discuss repair/construction work and required safety precautions.
• Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.

Primary Duties

The Substation Electrician installs, maintains and repairs Substation and underground electrical power lines and associated equipment. They will troubleshoot and repair faults in station equipment, underground electrical equipment and respond to emergency situations on a timely basis.

Special Working Conditions/Conditions of Employment

• Maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
• Required to perform after-hours on-call duties on a rotational basis and respond to emergency calls.
