Job summary

Toronto Hydro Corporation is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the upkeep and expansion of municipal transmission and distribution substations in Toronto. You will design, analyze, and test substation systems, coordinate cross-functional teams, and ensure adherence to Toronto Hydro standards.

The role involves working in a hybrid environment with on-site requirements and collaboration with Metrolinx projects across Toronto. A P.Eng. and 6+ years in electrical engineering are expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred).
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.
  • 6+ years of engineering experience.
  • Valid G license required.
  • Strong knowledge of protection and control concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide conceptual and detailed design services for substation projects.
  • Coordinate projects, prepare cost estimates, collaborate with suppliers, contractors, and utilities.
  • Perform short circuit analysis, load flows, arc flash, relay settings, and grid design.
  • Develop testing and commissioning plans, witness FAT/SAT tests.
  • Configure protection relays and station control systems.
  • Prepare electrical diagrams, schematics, and layouts.

Target Variable Performance Pay: 8%

The salary range shown above reflects the expected compensation for this position. The final salary offered will be determined based on a holistic assessment of the candidate’s experience, education, training, and alignment with the role’s requirements. For positions covered by a collective agreement, placement within the range will follow the applicable step or classification.

Reporting to the Manager of Stations & Distribution Automation, the Engineer will join a highly skilled engineering team, tasked with the upkeep and expansion of critical electrical infrastructure found in municipal transmission and distribution substations. Projects involve the installation, alteration, extension and/or repair of a variety of electrical equipment; controlled, monitored and/or automated by complex circuity, electronics, and advanced communication networks.

This posting is to fill up to 2 number of positions, at least one of which is an existing vacancy. Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in alignment with the applicable collective agreement, to finalize the number of positions filled.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide both conceptual and detailed design services for substation capital and reactive maintenance projects
  • Co-ordinate projects, prepare cost estimates, and collaborate with key stakeholders, including: equipment suppliers, contractors, and other utilities
  • Perform engineering studies and/or calculations, including: short circuit analysis, load flows, arc flash hazard assessments, protective device coordination, equipment selection & sizing, protection relay settings, and ground grid design
  • Develop equipment testing and commissioning plans, witness and approve equipment FAT, SAT testing
  • Configure and program SEL and GE station control systems, protection relays and distribution system network communications equipment
  • Prepare, provide guidance or assist engineering staff with the creation or modification of single line and three line diagrams, AC/DC electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and electrical layout and elevation drawings
  • Research, evaluate, test and recommend station equipment
  • Provide technical field support for operations staff
  • Develop standards and specifications
  • Plan and design processes, operational procedures, and safe work practices
  • Participate in short term and long term strategic planning
  • Prepare engineering or business reports (both oral and written)
  • Review, develop or present business proposals
  • Participate on committees or project teams as required on a wide variety of business initiatives
  • Support senior management on ad-hoc assignments
  • Mentoring and training designers and team members
  • Provide engineering support for Metrolinx transit expansion projects across Toronto—including LRT, subway, and GO Corridor works—by coordinating design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance activities while ensuring Toronto Hydro standards and asset protection requirements are met.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering(Electrical preferred)
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
  • 6+ years of Engineering experience
  • Must hold valid Class “G” Drivers License.
  • Proficiency in IEC61850 GOOSE messaging protocol, including configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of peer‑to‑peer protection and control signals within utility communication networks is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of protection and control concepts preferred
  • Familiarity with various station equipment, including switchgear, breakers and power transformers; proficiency in programming GE and SEL protection relays preferred
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, RTUs and data concentrators; station network topologies; relevant ethernet and serial communication protocols; copper, fiber optic and wireless communication systems preferred
  • Experience in the development of protection philosophies and the application of substation protection schemes
  • Proficiency in system modeling using engineering analysis software such CYME, ETAP or SKM an asset
  • Knowledge of, and ability to look‑up and correctly interpret relevant industry standards, including: CSA, ANSI, IEC and IEEE; relevant code, including: OESC, NESC, DSC, TSC, OBC, EUSR and UWPC; and relevant legislation, including: OHSA and Reg. 22/04
  • Familiarity with distribution system automation technologies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through report writing and delivering presentations
  • Demonstrated competence in computer programming
  • Project management skills with the ability to organize the project, work with key stakeholders, manage project risks, and deliver projects on time and within budget
  • General knowledge of overhead and underground distribution system design
  • Customer focused and demonstrates a pro‑active service orientation; must be able to meet customer needs in a flexible but cost-effective manner
  • Self‑motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize possibilities and opportunities for change in support of continuous process improvement
  • Accepts work assignments with clear understanding of related quality, quantity, cost and performance targets/expectations
  • Acts as a safety leader by incorporating safety and environmental considerations into business decisions and actions
  • Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders, e.g. designers, contractors, suppliers, HONI, various tradespersons, etc.

This position is based in a hybrid environment allowing for remote work two days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite Tuesday to Thursday. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
