Job summary

Alberta Health Services is seeking a Unit Clerk for the DTC Surgical Suite at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. You will manage the flow of communication among health professionals, patients and families, while maintaining strict confidentiality and handling a range of clerical and computer tasks.

You will support OR staff, prepare and maintain OR slates using Connect Care, greet visitors, transcribe orders, and coordinate tests and treatments in a busy high-acuity setting.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
  • Recent operating room or acute surgical care unit experience within last two years.
  • Experience scheduling surgical procedures in Connect Care programs.
  • One-year Unit Clerk certificate with practicum component required.
  • Course in medical terminology necessary.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.

Your Opportunity

The Unit Clerk in the DTCOR is part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides support for a fast paced, high acuity 13 theater Operating Room. They maintain a high traffic control desk, take emergency bookings, and answer telephones and intercoms. They are required to perform a variety of detailed clerical and computer tasks including preparing and maintaining OR slates using Connect Care programs. Unit Clerks assist with OR staff replacement as necessary. Critical thinking and the ability to prioritize multiple competing tasks is essential. The Unit Clerk is often the first point of contact for the OR so strong interpersonal skills are required. Given the high acuity of our patients and the fast paced nature of our environment, effective communication and organizational skills are essential. Record keeping must be neat and accurate. Unit Clerks have access to a large amount of confidential patient information therefore candidates must have a strong understanding of confidentiality requirements.


Description

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.


Required Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Recent experience in an Operating Room or acute surgical care unit within the last two years.
  • Recent experience in scheduling surgical procedures in Connect Care programs.
  • A one-year Unit Clerk certificate with practicum component from a recognized post-secondary institution is required.
  • The successful completion of a recognized course in medical terminology is necessary.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills are essential.
  • Microsoft Office skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant Unit Clerk experience in a high acuity setting may also be considered.
  • Workforce ESP experience is an asset.
