Job Description

Position Purpose Summary: The role provides service to customers, sorting incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Accountabilities: The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.

  1. Operations
    • Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
    • Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
    • Be knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items.
    • Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
    • Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
    • Adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
    • Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing donations.
    • Respond to customer inquiries by phone/in person with knowledge of stock.
    • Monitor store activity for security.
    • Assist with store layout plans, window displays, and merchandise displays to attract customers.
    • Control inventory through retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing as directed.
    • Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory, and remove inventory from sales floor.
    • Handle merchandise safely and organize stock rotation; recycle textiles and metals appropriately.
    • Assist donors, unload donations, and place stock accordingly.
    • Ensure proper sorting, processing, and pricing of goods according to store policy.
    • Perform other duties as required.
  2. Health and Safety
    • Contribute to safety by snow removal, fire exit clearance, cleaning spills, and removing obstacles.
    • Maintain an organized, safe store environment; clean and restock shelves; clean common areas on a rotational basis.
    • Comply with OH&S Act, regulations, and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies.
Relationship Management

Internal: Store Manager, Corps Officer(s), volunteers, staff
External: Guests, vendors

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

Reports to: Store Manager
Direct reports: None

Financial and Material Management
  • Moderate responsibilities for organization assets.
  • Use or maintain assets per guidelines.
  • No financial transaction processing or budget responsibilities.
Working Conditions
  • Permanent part-time position.
  • Variable schedule including weekdays and Saturdays.
  • Ability to stand long periods, with frequent bending, twisting, crouching, reaching, and lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Follow safety precautions, including gloves when handling unknown contents.
Qualifications
  • Willingness to support The Salvation Army's mission.
  • Compliance with OH&S regulations and policies.
  • High school coursework; alternative education/experience considered.
  • Experience in processing, distribution, or customer service (few months).
  • Knowledge of lifting guidelines and cash handling.
  • Experience with cash registers and computerized environments.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Attention to detail, self-motivated, disciplined.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Physically capable of lifting/carrying up to 29 lbs.

Ability to pass screening and background checks to The Salvation Army's satisfaction.

Compensation

Target range: $15.00/hour; maximum: $15.00/hour. Placement based on market, internal factors, and candidate qualifications.
