Job summary

CGIC in Canada seeks an Underwriter, Special Lines, for a regular full-time role with a hybrid work model (2 days in office). English is required; French is an asset.

You will support underwriting teams, assess risk, and mentor colleagues while ensuring policy terms and exceptions align with guidelines. You will analyze proposals, negotiate terms, monitor loss ratios and coach partners on coverage decisions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of related insurance experience or related work experience.
  • CIP designation completed or actively pursuing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical underwriting support and coverage information to advisors and claims.
  • Analyze, evaluate and negotiate terms, premium and conditions for renewal, new business and policy changes.
  • Confirm, analyze & monitor claims and policy/client/program loss ratios.
  • Amend policy coverages, surcharges or cancel policies applying underwriting decision making.
  • Resource and coach internal and external partners on policy wording and underwriting guidelines.
  • Coach our front line business partners to enable them to provide appropriate coverage terms and conditions for our clients.
  • Assist in the development of others in the organization through coaching, mentoring and guidance in risk assessment.
  • Accountable for conducting advisor, portfolio and random audits and compliance programs.

The Underwriter, Special Lines supports the organizations goals in achieving competitiveness, client engagement and the co-op experience by providing professional underwriting expertise and support to all of our departments while managing medium level risks for our clients and the organization. They respond directly to inquiries from internal and external clients and exercise sound underwriting judgment, and creativity in response to questions on policy interpretation, risk selection, rating and exceptions. They coach and mentor others within department as well as associated business partners. This role is also responsible for underwriting risks and evaluating their acceptability to the organization.

To Join Our Team
  • Minimum of two (2) years of successful related insurance experience or related work experience. University degree.
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) Designation completed or actively pursuing.

Salary information

Expected Salary range: CAD 50,280.00 to 83,800.00

The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co-operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.

Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn additional compensation tied to individual and/or business performance, or other business metrics.
