Zurich Canada’s Middle Market team is currently looking for a Bilingual Underwriter to analyze and underwrite new and renewal business while regularly interacting with the market. The role involves utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on assignments of moderate technical complexity to ensure a high level of service to customers.

Reporting to the VP Middle Market Eastern Region, you will interact closely with distributors and customers to understand their insurance needs and provide tailored solutions. This is a unique opportunity to build your knowledge and experience for the future in a supportive environment where your voice matters.

This is a hybrid work opportunity.

What you will do
  • Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Line of Business representatives and other business-related needs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) to support business retention and acquisition.
  • Act as a Help Point for agents, brokers, and customers to support the organization's sales culture.
  • Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
  • Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
  • Qualify accounts to ensure alignment with the organization's appetite and sound business opportunities.
  • Make broker/customer and on-site calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.
  • Cross-sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account.
  • Promote the organization's products and services to increase penetration with agency plants.
  • Participate in Sales Team meetings related to assigned brokers and/or territory.
  • Engage in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to effective date.
  • Update required systems with details of broker/client visits and account statuses within specified time frames.
  • Serve as key contact for assigned target accounts.
  • Calculate Target Price accurately using underwriting tools.
  • Measure exposures, analyze risk, quote and set coverage, negotiate terms and conditions.
  • Service accounts, handle declinations/cancellations.
  • Participate in marketing presentations to assigned agents/brokers.
  • Resolve technical problems by referring to policies, procedures, and specifications.
  • Provide technical expertise for short-term, defined scope projects.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory controls governing standard work practices.
  • Collect evidence from well-established sources and deliver accurate decisions to customers.
  • Monitor underwriting processes to identify opportunities for improvement.
Job Qualifications - What you bring to the table

Required:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 1 or more years of experience in the Insurance or Market Facing area.

OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

AND

  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory environment
  • Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines Preferred
  • Fluent proficiency in both English and French

Preferred:

  • Bachelors Degree with 1 or more years experience in the underwriting area
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Microsoft Office skills

Fluency in both spoken and written English is required to facilitate communication with internal and external stakeholders outside Quebec.
