Our customer, a major oil and gas producer, is looking for a contract Turnaround Planner – Piping for a 1.5-year term with the possibility of extension. This is a camp-based position out of Ft. McMurray with flights provided from Edmonton or Calgary. It follows a 4/3 schedule; 10-hour shifts. The successful candidate's primary responsibility will be to prepare Piping scope work packages, ensuring alignment with the client's expectations and standards.
Responsibilities:
Strategy/Early Planning Phase:
- Develop Job Plans for assigned scope in accordance with the Job Plan Development Process.
- Leverage the Planning Norms database to provide preliminary hour estimates during the early budget development stage.
Planning Phase:
- Prepare work packages.
- Conduct job walkdowns to ensure work packages are fully complete and satisfactory, including all support craft requirements.
- Collaborate with Execution Coordinators, Piping Engineers, and Contractors to review scopes from a constructability perspective, ensuring tasks are properly planned.
- Participate in CWP reviews with execution coordinators and engineers to ensure the full scope of work is accurately reflected in work packages.
- Develop detailed task estimates, including duration and crew size for each activity.
- Review estimated hours with the execution team and secure approval before forwarding estimates to scheduler for P6 development.
- Develop Bill of Material (BOM) utilizing the standard template to identify all material needed for the scope of work.
- Work closely with material coordinators to identify the right parts needed for the scope of work and ensure timely delivery of necessary materials.
- Identify and list any specialty tools, resources, or equipment required for the work.
- Work with Supply Chain Management personnel when dealing with technical matters with OEM and Vendors.
- Provide regular progress updates to Planning Supervisors and proactively address any challenges to keep planning on track.
- Resolve technical issues related to piping installation by preparing and submitting detailed RFIs for clarification and resolution.
Execution Phase:
- Support planning of the Scope Change Requests (SCR) during the execution phase.
- Assist execution teams as required during execution.
- Collaborate closely with execution teams, schedulers, and document control to ensure the timely issuance of SCR work packages to contractors.
Post Phase:
- Contribute insights during lessons learned sessions, highlighting successes and areas for improvement.
- Update work packages with additional information gathered during execution to ensure accurate historical records for future reference.
Minimum Requirements:
- At least eight (8) years of experience in Piping Planning, with a minimum of four (4) years specifically focused on Turnaround Piping Planning.
- Turnaround/shutdown experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, or refinery sectors.
- Computer skills including Maximo or equivalent CMMS, SPR, Excel, and other Microsoft Office tools.
- A Mechanical Engineering diploma/degree, a Red Seal trade certificate, or a Mechanical Technologist qualification with demonstrated expertise in mechanical trades, especially in maintenance planning.
- Strong understanding of piping systems, including materials, welding, fabrication, and installation.
- Proficient in interpreting P&IDs, isometrics, datasheets, equipment layouts, etc.
- Strong organizational skills, proactive mindset, effective time management, and excellent communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and timelines, especially during the turnaround execution phase.
- Willingness to work extended shifts, including day/night as required.
- Prepared to take over partially completed work packages from other planners and complete them during the shift.
