Our Tunnel Group and Rail and Transit Group are expanding, seeking an Intermediate Tunnel Engineer to join us in Mississauga or Markham, ON. You will contribute to a variety of tunnel engineering projects. The Tunnel Group works on large diameter subway transit lines in GTA, municipal projects in Ontario, pursuits in Vancouver, and subway lines in Australia.
As an Intermediate Tunnel Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting project work within GHD’s Rail and Transportation division and other tunneling projects across Canada and internationally.
- Responding to technical and administrative tasks related to tunnel and station development.
- Conducting analysis for tunnel liners and shaft design using software like PLAXIS, FLAC, Rocscience, etc.
- Preparing tunnel reports for proposals.
- Attending client meetings with supervisors.
Skills and Competencies:
- Experience working within tunnel design or construction teams.
- Designing large diameter tunnels (6m+).
- Designing deep shafts and shoring structures.
- Experience with tunnels in soft ground and underground transit support structures.
- Proficiency with analytical and numerical analysis methods and geotechnical software.
- Knowledge of tunneling and shaft construction methods, logistics, equipment, and methodology.
- Experience calculating tunnel-induced settlement and assessing infrastructure damages.
- Familiarity with settlement instrumentation and monitoring.
- Experience with TBMs and precast linings.
- Knowledge of ground treatment and ground freezing techniques.
- Ability to prepare GBRs, review GDRs, and plan geotechnical investigations.
- Ability to prepare PSOS specifications.
- Experience with cost estimating and scheduling for tunnel/shaft construction.
- Experience preparing detailed design and construction reports.
- Strong technical writing, presentation, and teamwork skills.
- Supporting project pursuits and proposal writing.
Qualifications:
- Degree in geotechnical, geological, or civil engineering; a Master’s in Tunnel/Geotechnical Engineering is a plus.
- Professional status (e.g., P.Eng) or working towards it.
- Proven experience in tunnel engineering, transportation, and rail projects.
- Minimum 4 years post-graduate experience in tunnel and underground projects.
- Valid Ontario G Driver’s License.
