Our Tunnel Group and Rail and Transit Group are growing, and we are looking for an Intermediate Tunnel Engineer to join us in Mississauga or Markham, ON. You will play a key role in various tunnel engineering projects, working on tunnelling projects for large diameter subway transit lines in GTA, municipal projects in Ontario, pursuits in Vancouver, and subway lines in Australia.
As an Intermediate Tunnel Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with project work within GHD’s Rail and Transportation business and supporting other tunnelling projects across Canada or internationally.
- Responding to technical and administrative tasks related to tunnel and station development.
- Carrying out analysis for tunnel liners and shaft design using PLAXIS, FLAC, Rocscience, etc., as directed by senior team members.
- Preparing tunnel reports for proposals.
- Attending client meetings alongside supervisors.
Skills and Competencies:
- Experience working within tunnel design or construction teams.
- Designing large diameter tunnels (6m+).
- Designing deep shaft & shoring structures.
- Experience in tunnel design in soft ground and transit underground support.
- Proficiency with industry-standard geotechnical software (PLAXIS, FLAC, Rocscience, etc.).
- Knowledge of tunnelling & shaft construction methods, logistics, equipment, and methodology.
- Ability to calculate tunnel-induced settlement and analyze damages to adjacent infrastructure.
- Familiarity with settlement instrumentation & monitoring.
- Experience with TBMs & precast linings.
- Knowledge of ground treatment & ground freezing for soft ground tunnelling.
- Preparation of GBRs and review of GDR and geotechnical investigations.
- Ability to prepare PSOS specifications.
- Familiarity with cost estimating & scheduling for tunnel/shaft construction.
- Experience in detailed design reports & construction reporting.
- Excellent technical writing, presentation, and teamwork skills.
- Assist with project pursuits and proposal writing.
Qualifications:
- University degree in geotechnical, geological, or civil engineering (Master’s preferred).
- Professional status (e.g., P.Eng) or working towards it.
- Proven experience in tunnel engineering, transportation, and rail projects.
- Minimum of 4 years' experience on tunnel and underground projects.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License (G).
