At this time in the institution’s trajectory, Trinity College aims to develop a robust commercial strategy that aligns with its strategic goals, advancing its financial sustainability while preserving the core mission of high-quality education and a vibrant student experience. It is within this context that Trinity College invites nominations and applications for the role of Director, Commercial Business Development, a position that will have an indelible impact on the future of the organization.

The Director, Commercial Business Development will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing Trinity College’s commercial strategy, aligning revenue-generating initiatives with the institution’s strategic objectives. Reporting to the Bursar and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this position will be responsible for maximizing the commercial potential of the College’s physical assets while maintaining the integrity of the academic environment. Key initiatives will include managing leases, hosting corporate events, facilitating filming opportunities, and optimizing the use of hospitality facilities and summer camps. The Director will lead the development of long-term commercial strategies, foster key stakeholder relationships, and oversee the operational expansion of the Lawson Centre for Sustainability in 2025. With strong financial acumen, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a deep understanding of and/or strong appreciation for the complexities of an academic institution, the Director will play a crucial role in enhancing Trinity College’s financial sustainability and institutional reputation.

Qualifications

Among the qualifications being sought in candidates, the incoming leader must have a deep and abiding commitment to advancing reconciliation, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in all its forms and must believe, intrinsically, in the importance of leading with curiosity and welcoming ideas that can later be synthesized and turned into possibility. While all candidates are encouraged to apply and, in so doing, share how they see themselves adding value to the Trinity College environment, the following credentials and/or experiences are seen as possible markers of the candidates most likely to realize success in the role: A) a proven track record of success in commercial leadership, including business development, financial management, and strategic marketing; B) demonstrated ability to balance commercial objectives with academic integrity and community values; C) extensive experience in leading and managing teams, with outstanding people management and leadership skills; D) strong financial acumen, including experience in budget preparation, revenue generation, and operational oversight; E) exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders; F) a history of successfully implementing significant change, introducing new programs, and driving innovation in complex environments, and; G) experience managing high-stakes partnerships in academic, not-for-profit, property, hospitality, or other relevant sectors, with an understanding of the nuances of working within a unionized environment.
