Job summary

The City of New Westminster is seeking a Transportation Co-op Student to support planning and engineering projects focused on safer, more walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly streets. The term runs January 4, 2027 to August 31, 2027, with 35 hours per week and an auxiliary employment status.

Responsibilities include data collection and analysis, public and stakeholder engagement, preparing reports, and assisting with site inspections and mapping tasks using AutoCAD and GIS.

Qualifications

• Civil engineering student with interest in urban transportation and active modes.
• Awareness of the City of New Westminster’s master plans and climate initiatives.
• Familiarity with transportation software tools and data sets is a plus.
• Ability to use mapping tools and analyze data.

The City of New Westminster requires a motivated and dynamic co-op student to help achieve the City’s transportation goals, with a focus on making it safer, more comfortable and more convenient for people of all ages and abilities to walk, ride a bike and take transit in New Westminster. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about planning and design for all modes of transportation. Your duties will include contributing to transportation planning and engineering projects, data collection and analysis (including the ability to synthesize data collected into understandable presentation formats for decision-makers), research and conceptual design of basic transportation infrastructure, public and stakeholder engagement (including compiling, reviewing and assigning public requests and preparing written correspondence), performing site inspections, and preparing and maintaining a range of data sets, records, reports, memos, technical analyses, and documentation related to the work. This co-op term will start on approximately January 4, 2027 and end on August 31, 2027.

• Student in a civil engineering program, with an interest in and understanding of the importance of urban transportation and particularly active modes.
• Awareness of the City of New Westminster’s 2015 Master Transportation Plan, Seven Bold Steps for Climate Action, the All Ages and Abilities Active Transportation Network Plan, and the City’s and Region’s transportation system, including transit in New Westminster.
• Awareness of and appreciation for the roles and responsibilities of the external agencies involved in transportation issues affecting the City.
• Awareness of specialized transportation software tools, common traffic data sets, neighbourhood traffic calming devices, and basic infrastructure that supports active transportation would be an asset.
• Ability to use computer-assisted mapping techniques, procedures and software, such as AutoCAD, GIS software, graphics software, and relational databases would be an asset.
• Ability to administer assigned transportation projects, collect, research, organize, analyze and/or synthesize technical, statistical, and related data and information.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people at all levels, both inside and outside of the City.
• Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports and memos, correspondence and various other work-related materials through effective verbal and communication skills.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, technical reports and related material. The successful candidate may participate in public consultation processes and will have the flexibility to work in the evenings and on weekends as required.
