Job summary

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is the largest labour organization in Canada, bringing together dozens of national and international unions, provincial and territorial federations of labour and community-based labour councils to represent more than 3 million workers across the country.

The CLC has a vacancy for the existing position of Translation Coordinator. The Translation Coordinator is a highly experienced language professional responsible not only for translating documents but helps to strengthen the CLC's bilingual capacity by ensuring that organizational communications are accurate, consistent, accessible, and aligned with established language standards. The position also serves as a key internal resource for terminology, language quality, and the continuous improvement of the CLC's translation and bilingual communication practices.

This position is based at our headquarters office located in Ottawa, Ontario.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Translation and Language Services

• Translate a diverse range of documents and communications originating from CLC departments and regional offices, in both official languages.
• Produce accurate, clear, fluent, and contextually appropriate translations while preserving the meaning, tone, intent, and organizational voice of the original text.
• Adapt translations to the intended audience and purpose.
• Identify and resolve linguistic, contextual, and terminological issues in source materials and translations.
• Provide advice to CLC staff on translation-related questions, including language usage, terminology, style, and bilingual communications.

Terminology and Language Resources

• Research terminology, concepts, and specialized language relevant to materials requiring translation.
• Develop, maintain, and continuously enhance the CLC's terminology database by documenting approved terminology, expressions, definitions, usage notes, and other relevant linguistic information.
• Promote consistent use of approved terminology and expressions across departments and regional offices.

Collaboration and Organizational Support

• Establish effective working relationships with staff across departments and regional offices.
• Consult with subject-matter staff experts to clarify technical, operational, or organizational terminology and ensure accurate translation of specialized content.
• Contribute linguistic expertise to projects and initiatives requiring bilingual or multilingual communications.
• Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment when handling sensitive organizational information.
• Stay current with developments in translation methodologies, language technology, terminology management, and best practices relevant to the role.
• Arrange additional translation support and ensure sufficient coverage during peak periods when translation volumes are higher than usual.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in Translation, Linguistics, Languages or a related field. Equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.
• A minimum of ten (10) years professional experience translating English to French and French to English, preferably within a team environment.
• Excellent written and oral proficiency in both English and French, with advanced knowledge of grammar, syntax, terminology, and stylistic conventions in both languages.
• Strong research and analytical skills, particularly in identifying and validating specialized terminology.
• Experience with terminology management, translation memory tools, Trados Studio or other language technologies is an asset.
• Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to manage multiple translation assignments while meeting deadlines.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with all levels of staff.

The starting annual salary for this position is $117,122.35 plus benefits under the collective agreement of the IAMAW, Local Lodge 3111 CULR. This includes generous health, vision, and dental benefits, group life insurance and LTD coverage, pension, as well as a monthly vehicle allowance and coverage for fuel, internet, and cell phone.
