Job summary

Lil’wat Nation invites applications for a Casual Transition House Support Worker in the Child & Family Services department. The role provides crisis intervention and emergency shelter services for First Nation community members, reporting to the Transition House Supervisor.

Responsibilities include maintaining the transition home, assisting residents with daily needs, connecting clients to social and community resources, and documenting progress.

Qualifications

• Completion of a college or university program in Social Work, Child & Youth Care, Psychology or other social science or health-related discipline is an asset
• Previous work in social services may replace education requirements
• Ability to deal with conflict situations and use non-violent crisis intervention
• Outstanding written and verbal communication in English
• Ability to work independently and in teams
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail
• Must have knowledge of Lil’wat Nation and surrounding First Nations communities and culture
• Knowledge of systemic issues affecting families facing domestic violence
• Experience with Microsoft Office is an asset
• Current First Aid, Food Safe, WHMIS an asset
• Ability to maintain flexible schedule including day/evening/overnight (overnight shift premium)
• Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs
• Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check
• Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s license and clean Driver’s Abstract

• Assist residents with services within the Transition Home (kitchen, laundry, assisting clients with caring their personal belongings into their room, unloading food delivery into the transition home, etc)
• Refer clients to other social services or assist them in locating and utilizing community resources including legal, medical, and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, daycare, schooling, counseling, etc.
• Meet with clients to assess their progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problems
• Tracking clients' behavioural changes and responses to interventions through daily charting
• Maintain contact with other social service agencies and health care providers involved with clients to provide information and obtain feedback on clients' overall progress
• Transportation to and from appointments within and outside of the community
• Assist with the intake process and reports for new residents
• Participate in the development and implementation of safety plans
• Perform other related duties as requested

Pay Grid: Salary Range 2 ($25.89 to $33.98 per hour)

Reporting to: Transition House Supervisor

Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the Transition House Supervisor, the Transition House Support Worker is responsible to provide crisis intervention and emergency shelter services for First Nation community members.

Key Deliverables and Expectations:

• Maintain general upkeep of the building and cleaning.
• Assisting residents with services within the self-contained Transition Home (ex. kitchen, laundry, assisting clients with caring their personal belongings into their room, unloading food delivery into the transition home, etc)
• Refer clients to other social services or assist them in locating and utilizing community resources including legal, medical, and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, daycare, schooling, counseling, etc.
• Meet with clients to assess their progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problems

Experience and Attributes:

• Completion of a college or university program in Social Work, Child & Youth Care, Psychology or other social science or health-related discipline is an asset
• Previous work experience in a social service environment as a volunteer or in a support capacity may replace formal education requirements
• Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, mediate, manage aggressive behaviour, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in the English language
• Ability to work independently and as an integral member of various teams.
• Strong organizational & multi-tasking skills, meticulous attention to detail, and time management skills
• Must have knowledge of Lil’wat Nation and surrounding First Nations communities and their respective culture and protocols.
• Knowledge of systemic issues that may affect families facing domestic violence issues (ex. Lateral violence, trauma-informed lens, etc.)
• Experience with Microsoft Office programs an asset
• Current First Aid, Food Safe, and WHMIS an asset
• Ability to maintain a flexible schedule, that allows for day, evening & overnight work (shift premium of $3/hr for overnight shift.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position, including lifting up to 25lbs
• Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check
• Must possess a Valid Class 5 Driver’s license and have a clean Driver’s Abstract
