Job summary

Aecon is seeking a Traffic Control Co‑op Student for the Deerfoot Trail Improvements Project in Calgary, Alberta. This site‑based role provides hands‑on experience in traffic management, planning, and roadway construction alongside engineers and construction professionals.

You will learn to develop TMPs, coordinate lane closures, inspect field setups, and assist with permits and stakeholder communications while contributing to safe and efficient project delivery on Calgary's busiest corridors.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a post-secondary Civil/Construction/Transportation program.
• Interest in traffic management and roadwork.
• Able to read engineering drawings and construction docs is a plus.

Responsibilities

What is the Opportunity?

Aecon is seeking a Traffic Control Co‑op Student to join the Deerfoot Trail Improvements Project in Calgary, Alberta. This site‑based position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands‑on experience on one of Calgary's largest and most impactful transportation infrastructure projects. Working alongside experienced traffic coordinators, engineers, and construction professionals, the successful candidate will gain exposure to all aspects of traffic management and roadway construction, including traffic staging, lane closure planning, stakeholder coordination, permitting, public safety, and daily field operations. This role provides valuable opportunities for professional growth, learning, and career development while contributing to the safe and efficient delivery of improvements to one of Calgary's busiest transportation corridors.

What You'll Do Here

• Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for construction activities within the project corridor.
• Support the coordination of lane closures, detours, road restrictions, and traffic staging activities to minimize impacts to the travelling public.
• Conduct field inspections to verify traffic control devices, signage, barriers, and detour routes are installed and maintained in accordance with project requirements and regulatory standards.
• Monitor traffic control operations and identify opportunities to improve safety, traffic flow, and construction efficiency.
• Assist with obtaining and tracking traffic permits, approvals, and notifications required for roadway work.
• Coordinate with project engineers, superintendents, subcontractors, municipal authorities, and stakeholders regarding upcoming traffic impacts and construction activities.
• Participate in traffic control meetings and contribute to the planning of upcoming traffic shifts and staging changes.
• Prepare and maintain traffic control documentation, reports, sketches, and daily records.
• Support incident investigations, inspections, and corrective actions related to traffic control and public safety.
• Assist with public communications related to road closures, detours, and construction activities.
• Track quantities, costs, and productivity associated with traffic control operations and temporary traffic management measures.
• Promote and support Aecon's health, safety, and environmental programs while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and project requirements.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Traffic Control Coordinator or Project Team.

What You Bring To The Team

• Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or related post‑secondary program.
• Strong interest in traffic management, transportation infrastructure, roadway construction, and public safety.
• Basic understanding of traffic control principles, construction staging, and temporary traffic management practices is considered an asset.
• Familiarity with engineering drawings, traffic control plans, specifications, and construction documents is an asset.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Civil 3D, or other engineering software is considered an asset.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced construction environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with project teams, subcontractors, clients, and external stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary project team.
• Comfortable working in an active construction environment and conducting field inspections in various weather conditions.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a vehicle is required.
