Program Overview – Live-In Treatment Program
Turning Point Youth Services (TPYS) is an accredited, non-profit agency serving youth (12 to 24 years) and their families in Toronto's east end. Its mission is to empower youth to make positive change through services focused on mental health, housing, and youth justice. Recently, TPYS integrated with WoodGreen Community Services to enhance support for youth in the GTA.
Role Description
The Youth Mental Health Court Worker (YMHCW) provides assessment, referral, and case management for youth involved in youth justice matters. The YMHCW establishes linkages with community, mental health, and youth justice resources and plays a key role in the Community Youth Court, making recommendations to the Crown Attorney and developing treatment plans.
Responsibilities
- Implement trauma-informed, strengths-based, relationship-based care principles.
- Conduct criminogenic risk assessments and mental health screenings.
- Provide assessments and brief counselling, promoting youth and family engagement.
- Foster an inclusive environment respecting diversity.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to serve youth and families.
- Develop and oversee service/treatment plans.
- Maintain accurate client files in accordance with policies and legislation.
- Complete administrative duties timely.
- Use communication systems effectively for client and program information.
- Represent the agency professionally with all stakeholders.
- Participate in team meetings, ongoing training, and supervision.
- Adhere to agency policies and procedures.
- Identify and recommend improvements to services and policies.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, or Counselling.
- At least 3 years of experience working with adolescents, preferably in youth justice.
- Experience with evidence-informed interventions for youth with mental health and substance issues.
- Strong clinical assessment and brief counselling skills.
- Knowledge of mental health diagnoses and treatments.
- Ability to work from a strengths-based, relationship-based approach.
- Understanding of YCJA and youth criminogenic risks.
- Sensitivity to diverse client and staff backgrounds.
- Ability to develop strong community and youth justice system relationships.
- Experience in youth justice or children’s mental health systems.
- Ability to work independently and in teams.
- Strong case management and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of community resources and networking skills.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Valid First Aid/CPR and crisis intervention training.
- Registration with Ontario College of Social Workers or equivalent.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience engaging youth and families with a strength-based approach.
- Ability to work with marginalized communities, including LGBTQSS+ youth, culturally diverse groups, and those impacted by poverty.
- Knowledge of social determinants of health, anti-oppression, and trauma-informed practices.
This is a collective bargaining unit position with CUPE Local 3501.
