Qualifications

Wage range: $35.52 - $50.85 per hour. Start rate determined in accordance with collective agreement requirements.

Position Summary

As an integral part of the Medical Emergency Radiation Incident Team, the MERIT DECONTAMINATION REGISTERED NURSE practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, the UHN Professional Practice Model and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN to provide compassionate, collaborative and competent care, while meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.

Duties

  • Participation in the decontamination of a radioactively contaminated patient.
  • Arrives at Hospital within a maximum of 45 minutes of call.
  • Assists in the set up of the radiation emergency area (REA).
  • Receives the patient from the ambulance and assists in the transfer to the REA.
  • Collects specimens from the patient for identification of radioactive contaminants on or in the body.
  • Decontaminates the patient preventing the spread of contamination over and into the patient.
  • Limits and contains radioactive materials in the REA.
  • Assists in the transfer of the patient from the REA.
  • Performing other related patient care responsibilities to facilitate the provision of optimal patient care, liaises with patient, explains, and ensures informed consent (verbal/written) is obtained for procedures, when necessary.
  • Explains procedures in detail to patients to alleviate concerns relating to procedures.
  • Liases with appropriate personnel to verify pertinent patient data.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nursing Program in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses.
  • Completion of a Basic Life Saving Program (BLS) with current certificate.
  • Emergency nursing experience required.
  • Knowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols and practices required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education required.
  • Minimum 2 year employment commitment to MERIT program following Hospital sponsored REAC/TS training.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, push, pull, lift without physical discomfort.
  • Required to take a call rotation to allow for 24 hour 7 days a week unit coverage.
  • May be required to work day, evening, night, weekend or holidays.
  • Must be within 45 minute response from Hospital.
  • Complies with Body Substance and Radiation Anti-contamination provisions.
  • Work is performed in emergency room environment.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, ionizing radiation, and potential exposure to latex.
  • Compliance with sanitary, sterile and infection control requirements.
  • Vaccines (COVID and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
