Job summary

Wentworth Mold, part of Wentworth Technologies, is seeking a Tool Maker in Brantford. The role focuses on manufacturing, fitting, assembling, testing, and repairing plastic blow molds and tooling. Requires advanced machining and mold-building skills, independent work from technical drawings, and ability to guide apprentices.

The position reports to the Toolroom Supervisor and emphasizes safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret complex drawings and mold designs to produce parts.

  • Ensure quality with calipers, micrometers, and gauges during process.
  • Provide guidance to apprentices and junior staff.

Summary:

The Tool Maker is responsible for manufacturing, fitting, assembling, testing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing plastic blow molds and related tooling. The position requires advanced machining and mold-building skills, sound judgment, and the ability to select manufacturing processes that achieve the required quality in a cost-effective manner.

The Tool Maker works independently from technical drawings and specifications and may provide technical guidance to apprentices and less-experienced team members. Reports to Toolroom Supervisor

  • Report and communicate any potential hazard, unsafe practices or working conditions.
What will you do?
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, tolerances, specifications, work instructions and mold designs.
  • Thorough understanding of mold construction and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Identify, inspect, and prepare appropriate hand tools, measuring instruments, fixtures, cutters, and work holding for performing mold build.
  • Operate manual metal-removal equipment such as saws, mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, and radial arm drills.
  • Machine, deburr, polish, and finish mold components to specified dimensions.
  • Use measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, and gauge pins; record in-process and final quality results.
  • Conduct mold testing activities, including water checks, graduation checks, and pinch-off tests etc.
  • Experience working with common mold materials, including aluminum, stainless steel, beryllium copper, and P20 steel.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, guarding, lifting, PPE, chemical, and other health and safety requirements.
  • Participate actively in apprenticeship training, coaching, competency reviews, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Experience diagnosing mold problems in-house and, when required, at customer facilities.
  • Follow all company health and safety requirements and use the prescribed personal protective equipment.
  • CNC machining, welding, or plastic-processing experience is an asset.
What you need:
  • A Great Attitude!
  • Mold Maker, Tool and Die Maker, General Machinist, or related technical trades certification or diploma preferred.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, mold designs, specifications, and job requirements.
  • Select machining and manufacturing processes that achieve the required quality, accuracy, delivery, and cost objectives.
  • Establish suitable machine setups, cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and work-holding methods.
  • Inspect completed work using precision measuring and inspection equipment.
  • Fit and assemble mold components and complete final mold assembly.
  • Perform mold water checks, graduation checks, pinch-off tests, spotting, and other required verification activities.
