The University of Alberta is inviting applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The successful candidate will build a nationally and internationally recognized research program aligned with strategic health research areas.
Focus areas include drug discovery, health services research, and CIHR pillars. Strong emphasis on mentoring, leadership, and collaboration with internal and external partners.
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FPPS) invites applications from current FPPS employees who hold a tenured or tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC).
This internal opportunity reflects the Faculty's commitment to advancing research excellence by supporting an exceptional emerging researcher in developing an internationally recognized program of research. Through the Canada Research Chairs Program, the Faculty seeks to strengthen its research capacity, foster innovation, and build on its existing strengths across the spectrum of health research.
This Faculty welcomes applications from researchers working in all four Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) pillars of health research (Biomedical Research; Clinical Research; Health Services Research; and/or Social, Cultural, Environmental and Population Health Research). Particular interest exists in research aligned with the Faculty’s strategic strengths in Drug Discovery and Development and Health Services Research; however, outstanding applicants from all areas of health research will be considered.
The successful candidate will be an exceptional emerging researcher who is, or demonstrates the potential to become, a nationally and internationally recognized leader in their field. The Chair will establish and lead an innovative and impactful research program that complements the Faculty's strategic research priorities and is supported by competitive peer-reviewed funding, including funding from the CIHR or other prominent funding agencies (or with the potential for such support in the near future).
Hiring preference will be given to candidates who have received a minimum of two years of postdoctoral training.
Tier 2 CRCs are intended for exceptional emerging researchers (i.e., candidates must have had their first independent active research-related appointment for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from their first independent academic research-related appointment (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process. Please consult the University of Alberta CRC Coordinator, Glen Thomas (crcadmin@ualberta.ca) for more information. Full program information, including details on eligibility criteria and acceptable leaves, can be found on the Canada Research Chairs website: http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx
NB: The CRC Program does not require a PhD (and the stipulations of a PhD is a requirement of the faculty only).
The University of Alberta recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate's record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process.
The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to conduct and lead original, innovative research working in a collaborative team environment, and will possess excellent communication skills.
Please consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria.
The successful applicant will be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair. Nominations are subject to review by the CRC Secretariat, and appointment as a Canada Research Chair is conditional upon their approval.
Questions about this competition should be sent electronically to Afsaneh Lavasanifar, Associate Dean Research and Graduate Studies, afsaneh@ualberta.ca.
Questions about the CRC Program can be directed to Glen Thomas, CRC Coordinator and Advisor, crcadmin@ualberta.ca.
Applicants who require an accessibility arrangement for their application, interview, and/or subsequent recruitment meetings can contact Christine Rimell at christine.rimell@ualberta.ca to arrange appropriate accommodations.
The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule A of the collective agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
