Job summary

Ontario Public Service in Toronto seeks a Technician, Equipment Development to design, build and modify specialized lab and field testing equipment for ministry use. You will guide contractors, train staff on operation and maintenance, and implement safety improvements in equipment throughout projects.

The role requires hands-on machining, welding, electronics, hydraulics, and electrical know-how, plus the ability to read technical drawings and follow safety regulations.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Ontario Class G licence.
  • Experience with machining, welding, electronics, hydraulics, electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read drawings, handbooks, and technical instructions.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations applicable to the work.

Responsibilities

About the job

In this role, you will:

  • develop, design, and construct new, and modify existing, specialized laboratory and field testing equipment for use by the ministry
  • specify, select and monitor contractors repairing and replacing laboratory equipment
  • instruct and train ministry staff on the use and maintenance of equipment and resolve operating problems and deficiencies
  • develop, design and construct testing equipment for use in the laboratory and in the field
  • monitor technological and equipment safety changes and recommending and implementing technical and equipment safety improvements to laboratory equipment
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
  • Job requires valid Ontario Class "G" licence
Technical Knowledge:
  • knowledge of the theories, practices and principles of and experience with: machining, welding, electronics, woodworking, hydraulic systems, refrigeration systems, electrical (-220v) and mechanical equipment, maintenance and repair to construct, evaluate, and perform diagnosis and repairs on variety of specialized laboratory and field testing equipment
  • Expertise and skill in machining, as well as proficiency in welding
  • knowledge of all MTO laboratory testing equipment and plant, familiarity with intricacies and components of small equipment, ability to understand drawings, handbooks, trade catalogues and related engineering publications, and demonstrated aptitude and experience in visualizing operating requirements based on rough sketches/discussions
  • knowledge of relevant acts and regulations that apply to the work as well as knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health and safety in the workplace to perform duties safely
Analytical, Evaluation and Manual Skills:
  • analytical and manual skills to perform mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic system diagnosis and repair to assist in searching for, evaluating and selecting appropriate test procedures, assessing results and troubleshooting problems
  • evaluation skills to determine whether repairs can be made or equipment should be replaced
  • assessing skills to determine relative worth of repair versus replacement
  • ability to understand drawings and technical instructions,
Communication Skills:
  • oral communication skills to provide guidance on new and repaired equipment to clients, and to deal with suppliers, and contractors installing new equipment
  • written communication skills to assist with sourcing parts for repair, selecting and purchasing most appropriate parts with regard to cost and overall taking into account life cycle costing techniques
Planning & Organizational Skills:
  • Planning and organizational skills to manage activities and workload priorities and to ensure unexpected/unusual requests or projects are carried out, often within tight time frames and to meet clients' needs.
Interpersonal Skills:
  • interpersonal skills to consult with ministry staff on their laboratory equipment related matters as well as with vendors.
